This year was pretty much terrible for a wide variety of reasons. And with the world seemingly sliding further into a mire of intolerance, apathy and violence, it was nothing short of therapeutic to watch a movie where people actually get along with one another. Where mutual respect and helping each other out leads to an improvement in people's lives. So uplifting in its sincere niceness that it was hard not to get kinda emotio- erm, I mean, I kinda liked it I guess whatever pfff.

What a pleasant surprise. It’s refreshing to see a world so full of warmth and kindness. They’re so carefree in this universe people aren’t pissed off they were shafted at birth and not able to fly. The most evil thing a person does in this movie is talk shit about their grandma’s cooking. I watched this in original Japanese with subtitles because I’m not a heathen but then noticed on IMDb Phil Hartman voiced JiJi so I went back and fast forwarded through to the Jiji scenes and meow.

Studio Ghibli's top director is responsible for this breathtakingly animated (as usual) children's movie, although by western standards it's way too intelligent to be for kids. Sure it's very lighthearted but if you have any emotion in you whatsoever, you will be swept away by Kiki's typically meager little witch girl troubles, which are so well rendered. And being the maniacal cat lover that I am, Jiji instantly became my all-time favorite animated cat.

A rich tale about independence, in which the director frames the new life of this lonely but strong teen witch as a superhero story -- she comes to a new town, helps people by delivering their stuff, starts to lose her powers and, eventually, saves the boy that loves her. Miyazaki is the master of looking extraordinary acts in common people. His heroes are poor, anonymous workers, working class people. They have their lives changed by changing other people's lives.

Miyazaki is good at making everyday experiences beautiful, and, unlike the vast majority of filmmakers, knows how the little frustrations of a newly-minted teenager work.

Such an interesting film because Kiki is no savant, no huge prodigy - her skill is not refined or has a great deal of perfecting necessary before the end of the film. She may not even be average -- there are hints she's a subpar witch, but with a warmth of heart transcending her station in life. So the focus becomes maximizing your sometimes limited potential, not reaching for the stars, or maybe landing on the moon. For some, Earth is a fine place to be.

What always strikes me about Miyazaki's work is how much effort is devoted to how things move and interact - everything has weight, the wind has real force behind it, and it all feels so real and tactile. It's something you don't see often in animation. Now, Kiki's Delivery Service is a bit on the light side, but watching Kiki herself stumble around a kind, lovely world and find herself is a wonderful time. Everyone needs a pessimistic animal sidekick.

Storywise, it's as light as a feather. There's little (if any) dramatic tension and what little plot there is merely serves to progress from one beautiful scene to the next. But I dare anyone not to have a warm fuzzy feeling in their stomach after watching this. It's light and fluffy whimsy executed with masterful precision.

The best magic here is in the bravery of a young child, augmented by the social structure that supports her. There is nothing so fleeting and transient as ethical exchange, this is less a romantic film than a romance about community. It doesn't have any wrong ideas and even a few mean ones about growing up.

I liked it quite a bit more on rewatch than I remembered from initial viewing. The characters are very likable and adorable, and the humor is excellent. It's a very whimsical film with beautiful animation. The story is good, but impales a bit in comparison to Miyazaki's other works for me. Still, this was very enjoyable And beautifully done. I'm willing to bet it was a huge hit upon release when 2D animated movies were so big. The ending feels slightly rushed, but this was still very good.

Passes the Bechdel test with flying and colours: Kiki's forest talk with Ursula about art, magic, and inspiration was brilliant, but that's not to slight her coffee with Osono or birthday exchange with the old woman. These dynamics combined with Kiki's business blunders (Jiji's sacrifice was hilarious) and poignant personal growth (from "something's wrong with me" to the brave rescue to the letter home: "there are still times when I feel sad") make for a deceptively powerful coming-of-age tale.

Top-notch Miyazaki entertainment, about a young apprentice witch who sets out to make her mark. There's not a ton of plot here (or much conflict), but the film is so full of warmth and humor that it doesn't matter. Fine characters (Jiji the cat is especially memorable), fine voicework in the American version, and a beautiful score. And, of course, Miyazaki's wonderful animation. Perfect family entertainment.

If you disregard the fact that the main character is a witch, Kiki's Delivery Service is quite ordinary and down to earth. The animation is plain compared to what the Ghibli guys would go on to do, but it more than gets the job done. The story is utterly charming, and the ending, while somewhat fluffy and obvious, will make you feel great about life.

This was surprisingly cute and sweet. The beginning was a little typical, but after that I found myself becoming increasingly engrossed in the story. The characters are so adorably drawn and the cats were perfect! The way they moved was great!! The film consists of lots of tiny plots all circling around the central one, Kiki. It's not, perhaps, cinematic brilliance, but it was enjoyable, and I was smiling practically the whole time!:D

A massively charming little film in its deeply human-level stakes framed through magic witchy shenanigans, its character relationships, and its coastal village settings, one of the most charming locales in all of Ghibli (and, by extension, in all of film). If I were to pick my favorite of Ghibli/Miyazaki I'd probably lean more towards the epic fantasy of Nausicaa and Mononoke, but that isn't to say that this light-on-conflict, high-on-charm concoction doesn't belong in your collection.

Enormously endearing coming-of-age story that is at the same time highly emotionally intelligent and not running all that deep. Miyazaki has such an amazing talent of making the mundane every-day activities of a character seem like the most charming thing in the world. Kiki's Delivery Service is a coming-of-age story in which the only real conflict is self-doubt. Miyazaki's conceptualisation of witches in this film is more muted, allowing for a more (ironically) grounded character. I liked how Kiki dealt with situations and other characters' perceptions that were out of her control, cementing her as a great role model for children. Overall it's a calm, tempered film in its animation, music and plot that is still entertaining and engaging.

Phil Hartman's performance, while generally excellent, involves way too many sarcastic jibes apparently meant to fill in otherwise quiet scenes. As a personal narrative film it's a bit weak, and as a zen exercise it's definitely inferior to 'Totoro.' The climax is a blatant contrivance. All these issues are largely swept aside by the film's intense charm and stunning presentation, which demonstrates Miyazaki's great strength - the ability to put the viewer in a trance of childlike wonder.

This is the only Ghibli I haven't particularly enjoyed. It's just too empty. I think the blame may be placed on the English dub, which is the only Ghibli dub that's detracted from my enjoyment of the film. The fact that it's just 100 minutes of "cute" probably doesn't help either.

Lovely. I always love it when Miyazaki indulges his love of flight (which he does liberally here) and though it seems more 'kiddish' than Miyazaki's other films it is so emotionally mature and intelligent that anyone with a soul can enjoy it (though the boy here feels a bit too cartoonish and some of the coincidences, such as the toy looking like Kiki's cat, can be a bit hard to buy into). Utterly charming and very fun.

I thought this was a truly wonderful anime film. Although, this was really not unexpected from Hayao Miyazaki, of course. One of the things I really liked about this, and other Studio Ghibli films, is the female protagonist. It's not too often that you get a good, strong female lead character in children's animated films. I also thought it presented good moral values to kids. It's the type of film I'd be happy to show my children, if I had any. Cute, funny and wholesome. I loved it.

A magnificent, beautiful work. Seems most reviews on Criticker bump it down for being lighthearted (I doubt out of a negativity, but a sense of less importance). I can't agree. Kiki is nothing short of a tremendous, uplifiting film which contains no evil, but only the hardships and misgivings of good. I don't see this as a film to teach adults but one to inspire. For children, it is essential. PLEASE AVOID the Disney dubbing - most Ghibli dubs are good, but the English voicing is awful in Kiki!

Kiki is an everywoman witch just trying to make her way out in the wide world and this erstwhile Mary Tyler Moore does make it after all, leaning on her kindness, drive and her sardonic talking cat familiar. The animation is a bit dated, but the heart that courses through this story will stand the test of time. PSI: 88

I alternated between being bored and deeply moved, with much more of the latter by the end. Kiki's Delivery Service has a healthy dose of Ghibli magic combined with a realism that cuts deep and allows us to relate to Kiki. I find this combination---stories we can all recognise from our own lives together with fantasy---really fascinating and effective. Compared to many other Ghibli films with darker elements, Kiki's Delivery Service has smaller stakes, but this makes it much more personal.

English dub – Beautifully wrought version of a tried-and-true coming of age narrative - presents a benign and charming view of the "real" world, full of kind and compassionate characters, where the visually inventive animation creates a vivid and strikingly tactile environment for Kiki to explore. Excellent vocal performances (with Hartman’s Jiji sardonically stealing every scene) – and Kiki’s path to maturity and self-acceptance is beautifully and movingly told. A feel-good treat.

i watched this on the wrong side of a projector screen, so it was about a witch who puts a boy into a airship before it takes off, then flies around taking packages from people.

Does Gigi ever regain his voice actor? My favorite character disregarded as a meowing schlup right at the end there. Sad. Tumbo Timbo Waldo? I love Kiki and her vibe and the pregnant couple and Gigi when he could still talk but I would leave the rest. good music per usual
