Pickford speaks! And shouts! And tackles! And tickles! .... in yet another curious choice from her go at the talkies. Amusing in a "What on earth is Mary Pickford doing now?" sort of way. (Pulling out her brassiere? Feigning catalepsy? Setting a man on fire? Maybe some tumbling exercises?) It's a French play, so might as well lean into the farce. The stand-out moment of this production: the Busby Berkley take on the famous scene where Kiki makes a comedic mess of her chorus girl job.

One of only a handful Mary Pickford talkies. While she was the female-Chaplin of the silent era she didn't find her place in the sound era. You can see she is a good physical comedian, especially in her dance number early in the film, but her exaggerated acting style feels more suited for the stage and not really made for the sound pictures. While it takes some effort to overcome Pickford's over-the-top comedy, I still feel it's a okay farce comedy for this period even if a it's a bit out there.

An astonishingly terrible movie.
