An underdeveloped piece of trash sequel prompting doubts in my mind about whether or not the original really was as good as I remember it. The worst thing about it is that Wadlow doesn't seem to know the difference between what's funny and what's in poor taste.

It has more of the exuberant joy of joining a team and doing good together than Marvel's Avengers ever did, and more "heart" to it as well. The humour is exquisitely offensive - the only let down is the violence: the filmmakers use shaky-cam throughout, meaning that each action sequence is a horrible blur of motion and we never really see the story of how the fight went down. Using Hit Girl to tell a "Mean Girls" story was genius, and very welcome in a genre that usually panders to males.

I loved the first one, but what the hell was this? The fun is mostly gone. They try to replace Nic Cage's awesome wackiness with Jim Carrey. He tries his best but it just doesn't do it. Puke, diarrhea, and erectile dysfunction keeping a teenager from raping somebody is what constitutes humor. There is one action scene that I enjoyed. Also after 3 weeks of working out you are jacked and can do 1 arm pull-ups. This movie is dumb.

I could talk about how there's probably an essay on weaponized profanity in here, or profanity as a celebrated feature of adolescent fantasy. Or about how this flip-flops between being Kick-Ass' and Hit-Girls movie (lets face it: which one of the two really had a character arc?) or about how the opening is one of the most rushed pieces of expostion I can recall seeing, but all of that pales in the light of THE GODDAMN PLAYED-FOR-LAUGHS ATTEMPTED RAPE SCENE!!! WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL?!?!?

Not as good as the sequel I had hoped for, but not nearly as bad as the one that I expected, either. There's a pretty decent amount of delicious over-the-top comedy and violence here, but it is also missing a couple key ingredients that elevated the original (at least a bit). First, you never realize how much you like Nicholas Cage until he is not there anymore. And second, the comedy is more scattershot and less satirical than what was featured in the first. Not too bad, but not too good.

Really didn't have the charm and fun that the first one had. I like that they tried to maybe show the difficulties of Hit-Girl in the fact that she really can't be normal, but it just plays off like a sequel to Mean Girls. This movie should be fun and humorous and i just didn't find that at all. Jim Carrey was surprisingly one of the strengths of this movie along with it's first half. It really missed the craziness of Nic Cage, and the direction of Matthew Vaughn.

This is a significant downgrade on everything in the first movie. Much as Moretz and Carrey try, the film is just eh. The wibbly-wobbly tone doesn't help either

Gotta say I'm baffled by the sheer vitriol of the dislike I've seen for this film. Granted, it's not as good as the first one, lacking Matthew Vaughn's touch, but it's pretty fun all the same, doing a particularly good job developing Hit Girl's character. Most of the best jokes are in the first half of the movie, though; the second half arguably gets a bit too dour.

Kick-Ass 2 is very much the sequel that I was hoping for. It keeps the grittiness of the first film, the gratuitous violence is also present and it even develops these characters one step further. It is stylistic once again during fight scenes, and it is super fun to watch these characters again. Kick-Ass 2 is probably the best summer movie yet this summer, and such a badass way to end the summer. Kick-Ass 3 anyone? I'd be totally down to see another.

Although parts live up to the 1st film (Carrey's odd & suspect but well meaning hero is a great addition; Hit-Girl's van attack), many parts don't. 1 of the things that made the first film so compelling was how character development made sense, but here Hit-Girl's need to fit in feels false. Given her background wouldn't she just punch the mean girls? Her revenge is also anticlimactic. The editing is also awful, as if they are hoping rushing through the film will help us not notice the flaws.

Not quite on the same level as the first. You can definitely feel Cage's presence missing, and Jim Carey certainly didn't replace it. However,Johnson and Moretz are still great, Plasse has his moments, but can be annoying depending on how you view him. The film keeps its same tone, and thankfully it works pretty well with its comedic relief. The film is quite solid, but it never fully captures the same magic as the first, however it's still a worthy follow up.

Trades in the original's uplifiting silliness for somewhat mean-spirited and at times excessively dark content. Film can't really make its mind up whether it's a comic parody or subversive drama, and ends up in an disaffecting middle-ground. There are some strangely jumbled/queasy morals, plot points and beats that largely betray the lead characterisation. All that aside, the direction is solid, the budget is generous, and the pacing is tight enough that it mostly entertains til the end.

Rather than tiptoe the line between fantasy and reality like the first movie did, Kick-ass 2 opts to kick reality in the balls and make a fart joke. There is a lot of kicking, yes. But there is also a lot of ass. At least it's not as pedophilic now for responsible, law-abiding, sure-that's-a-lik-a-stik-in-your-pocket viewers to lust over Hit Girl?

Less fun than the first, with a few solid helpings of "Why the fuck did you think we wanted to see that" on top. Gutless; feels like it tries to be a light breezy comic-book comedy by day, but lies awake at night wishing it could just admit that it doesn't think it's funny anymore. Rewatch "Super" instead.

Some of the appeal of the first film carries over here, and the performances are effective (Moretz is great), but that is about it. This time around, the comic tone is undone somewhat by some of the themes and violence, which occasionally take a rather unpleasant turn. As such, we're left with a film that feels as though it has been assembled clumsily, and with a weak overall message. Despite that, there is still some fun to be had here, but overall it left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.

Kick-Ass 2 was a hugely anticipated sequel for many but it's sadly a major disappointment. I didn't entirely jump on the Kick-Ass bandwagon, but I certainly enjoyed it. However in comparison this sequel is much more unlikeable and it leaves something of a nasty taste. Chloë Grace Moretz is the only notable highlight and although I'm a big Jim Carrey fan, he just doesn't work here. Ultimately though nobody can make up for the show stealing wackiness that Nicholas Cage brought to the first film.

I wasn't expecting much from this, but what I got was total garbage. The movie is very violent, but many of the jokes seemed to be targeted at five-year-olds, so I'm confused... Also, the high school side-plot is awful. I kind of regret watching the film.

I really wasn't too wild about this sequel. The comedy wasn't toned down a lot and it's a lot darker than the first, even when it felt unnecessarily dark. Moretz steals her scenes and is a definite highlight as well as Johnson. I'm still left fairly disappointed though. If a third installment ever comes out, I hope it's a lot better and more satisfying than this.

If the first was a solid movie made very good by a few exceptional scenes and special moments, this second installment is another mostly solid effort that remains very average because of its lack of the very same. It's also, it has to be said, a significant step back in terms of story and style. But pointless violence and childish cruelty are two of my favourite things so you know... it was okay.

It was entertaining but it's definitely a lesser Kick-Ass 1. The Hit Girl sub-plot was fine, and when the action came it was pretty entertaining. However it suffers from no Big Daddy, and Carrey's character really couldn't replace that. There aren't any memorable scenes like the first, and even though I didn't find the first one THAT funny, it was funnier than this. Suffers from 'SWEAR WORDS ARE FUNNY' syndrome. Chloe is a great young actress though.

Every bit of profanity (The Motherfucker failing to get a boner in order to rape Night Bitch) and ultraviolence (headshots, mutilation and brutal killing) seems at the same time genuine, as a way to point out how uptight superhero movies use to be, and phony, as an attempt to show how ridiculous and naive the very concept of a vulgar high-school vigilante film looks like. Dirty, yes, but, for a rated R sequel looking for money, that means, well, shit.

A fun opening and a great finale bookend a tale of reluctant heroes who spend most of the movie being too reluctant to do anything. A bit of a disappointment in the action department, and the whole high school/mean girls thing was a total waste of time with a weak payoff. I want to see Hit Girl kill bad guys, not square up against snotty rich bitches. When they choose to let loose with the over the top violence, it's a good time.

Not sure yet whether its rewatch value is equal to that of its predecessor, but I'm still crazy about these characters and the wholly original, layered, colorful, swaggering, jazzed-up world they inhabit. I loved seeing Kick-Ass interact with a gang of superhero posers and bust up a human trafficking ring. I loved seeing Hit Girl deal with snobby rich bitches at her high school. I loved how explosive the climax was. I loved it. It just...pops.

As a huge, huge, (huge) fan of the first movie, my hopes were high but I tried to be careful with my expectations. Afterwards, I can say that my expectations are topped, but my hopes aren't fully fulfilled. It's just not as good as the first one. Jim Carrey is just great, it's a real shame he has so little screentime. The change in director is definitely noticeable, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Some things worked and some didn't, but in the end, I had a lot of fun with this movie.

Weaker than the first in every conceivable way, but not by too much. Too out of control to be a meta-commentary on superhero movies anymore, but still dishes out gleeful violence and enough good comedy until the end. It's not as good as the first - which resides in my all-time top 100 (just!). But it is still an absolute blast, exhibiting the same sharp script, standout choreography, and twisted blend of hyper-violence and dark comedy. 11 years on has meant I forgot about the moralistic hand-wringing that accompanied this film’s initial release – amped up to heightened comic-book primaries, the violence here is not especially impactful (and in film as in real life, Moretz the awesome ass-kicker can definitely look after herself), but the lurching, episodic narrative combined with a cluttered array of characters leave this as a series of good moments in search of a movie.

It's been so long since I saw the original I can barely remember it, but I do recall being impressed by the direction and concepts on show. This on the other hand is the definition of instantly forgettable: I can't say I actively disliked it in any way, but equally there's absolutely nothing I can praise it for either. About as bland and unnecessary as a cash-in sequel can get without becoming physically unwatchable.

I enjoyed the film but that's about as much as I can say - more of the same, perhaps a little less ballsy than the original - just wasn't really necessary, which can only lead to the conclusion that this was an attempt to cash in on the success of the original, which to be fair did have quite a great deal of gravitas in its day, and was probably more influential than it will ever be credited for.

If anything, this serves as an ideal case study for how to comprehensively botch a sequel. The returning characters shirk all preexisting likability, new cast members barely make an impression, none of the comedy lands and the action has absolutely no verve. Hit Girl’s high school subplot is positively abhorrent. In short, it’s dreadfully written and directed, and should never have been made without the original team at the helm.

Is Kick-Ass 2 worth seeing? If you liked the first one and want to see a sequel which takes these characters in new directions, I think so. Or, if you disliked the first film solely due to its violence, because this one tones down that aspect. Kick Ass 2 is a sequel that does nothing to improve upon its predecessor's foundations. It's just as stylish, but it doesn't do anything different with that. It's also not as funny. It got a handful of laughs out of me, but the writers took the comedy in a more offensive and squicky direction while simultaneously trying to up the stakes. It doesn't work.
