Kentucky (1938) was riding more on Loretta Young dazzling personality then its horse racing, hoping she could bring the spotlight to freshman Richard Greene at the same time. Instead from the Academy it was Walter Brennan that got the recognition of a Supporting Actor Oscar with his rather irritating Lionel Barrymore-mannered old man interpretation. This is a glamorized basic romance story with all the gimmickry of color and horses providing a camouflage for a script which really lacked depth.
