Between the avaricious foot soldiers, the monomaniacal captain, the thrill-seeking, ill-informed general, the liberation being a byproduct disguised as a tactical victory, and the almost-Kubrickian incongruity between the subject matter and a hippie-ish theme like "Burning Bridges," this is one of the most novel critiques of the Vietnam War (using World War II) around. It could be edited better, but it's still incredibly fun with some great performances. A great sister film to Where Eagles Dare.

Practically nothing to really enjoy. Maybe except the silly theme song and Donald Sutherland's Oddball. Give me The Dirty Dozen any day over this.

A most enjoyable war caper, with a great cast; Sutherland in particular brings a lot to the party. There are some nuggets of fairly intelligent commentary underneath the surface, but these don't intrude on the main thrust of the film which pushes forward with a fine sense of humour and a lot of charm. Good entertainment for a Sunday afternoon.

Silly, overlong war film is nevertheless compelling for its strange sensibilities (juxtaposing vivid violence with a blunt, sardonic sense of humour) and its deliberate, incongruous anachronisms (chiefly Sutherland's wonderful supporting performance as a hippie-ish soldier). Eastwood tends towards wooden here, but Rickles and Savalas are a lot of fun to have around, and the film is very entertaining until the somewhat ponderous, all-action climax.

Good fun for The Boys! War, action, rebels, humor, scheming, gold - Oh, and Clint Eastwood. How could you ask for more? You couldn't. Make sure to watch "Where Eagles Dare" as well, which is equally excellent (perhaps even more so) and then appreciate the true 'Basterds'

Stellar cast, reasonably imaginative story line (for the time), a good mix of humour, action and drama. Sufficient shoot em up action to keep the adrenalin junkies happy but sufficiently quirky (Sutherland in particular) to keep the pace moving and the story lively enough.

Great meld between the genres of heist movies and war movies. Donald Sutherland is fantastic and funny, most of the other characters are satisfactory. My only problem with this movie is that Clint Eastwood only has one expression in the entire movie and that is the "I'm looking straight into the sun" expression, although he does put on a half-smile for about a second at the end, but how does that constitute good acting?

Brian G. Hutton has not quite continued his touch to this mediocre war film which is nevertheless quite good entertainment. It's just FOR the 70's, when it's World War II that's in focus.

This didn't really appeal to me overall. There were some bits of fairly amusing dialogue and some decent action type scenes but there were also too many long, drawn out and fairly bland segments that stopped me from geeling engrossed. I'm not especially keen on older war films, it seems. I'd given this film a shot as I quite like Clint Eastwood films and it got a good average rate on IMDB but I can't give it more than a 5/10 personally and I wouldn't really recommend it as such, no.

the satire and the characters all work...but the length doesn't. the beginning especially lagged, and i was prepared to rank it lower, but the finale when they reach their destination earned those points back. loved the parody of eastwood's man with no name at the end.

Some of the most memorable characters ever to appear in a war movie. In addition to showcasing some excellent camera work, this film is hilarious and thought provoking on several levels. Totally different from any other war film I've seen. The weakest link in this film is Clint Eastwood, whose acting skills leave much to be desired!

Great war movie, my only gripe would be that Donald Sutherland felt really out of place as a Hippie burnout in 1940's Nazi Germany.

A spaghetti Western set in World War 2. It's really every bit as good as it sounds, though it was unfortunately marred by studio editing decisions. Still, this is excellent and I will defend it to the death.

Sutherland is a Canuck* and that has never been more painfully obvious than in this movie where he's supposed to be a US tank commander. The movie is enjoyable if you've got the mind of a sixteen year old, I guess. (* I like 'em. Really!)
