a misreading to call this "a film about the folly of making a biopic about christine chubbock". rather, it's an admittedly clumsy but searching, gratifyingly conflicted attempt to genuinely represent her values and her act - an act that was consciously invested with perspectives on authenticity and exploitation and which can't be done justice by a more conventional, literal treatment, no matter how assured.

A film about authenticity, as all of Greene's films are. Suicide is an expression of self in a way that few other things can be, & Chubbuck's fabled onscreen suicide, whatever her intentions, plays like a revolt against televisual attempts to provide a fastidiously managed, manicured, scripted facade. KPC plays with this tension -- about how to script a genuine raging against the media's impulse to script. The end, by going off-script, seeks to preserve the authenticity of the act itself.

Viewed August 25, 2016. Sometimes I think all movies should be as much about movies as Kate Plays Christine is. It's a terrific examination of filmed images and their place in our lives - how we make them, how we consume them, how they hold so much power over us. Greene creates a fully realized and human portrait of someone whose entire legacy is based around a suicide committed seemingly in the hopes of making a difference, but is now just a forgotten footnote in the history of live TV.
