Set in rural eastern Europe this wonderful take on the rape-revenge genre has a unusual feel to it.This is not the usual eastern-Europe-is-creepy-and-filled-with-creepy-people show known from torture-porn, but rather a slow paced, elegiac journey into the landscape and the moral dilemma of the title role. Hilda Péter is mesmerizing as the fragile but determined and energetic Katalin Varga; and a thrilling finale will have you on the edge of your seat as black and white turns...greyish.

Great atmosphere, visually fantastic let down by very poor acting.

Aside from the mobile phones, this looks like it could have been shot any time in the last fifty years. Spare filmmaking that really captures the mood of this magical place. Its simplicity is deceptive too: you find yourself pondering the complexities of revenge afterwards. An elegant, beautiful film made on a shoestring budget.

Thought provoking timeless story of the search for revenge and redemption. I found the shaky, lingering camera work, mood music and slightly cliched naturalistic views a bit repetitive in the first half of the film but by the end I had been totally drawn into the story.

Visually stunning and it lingers on in some scenes making it seem longer, and a bit more fullfilling, than the 80mins.
