I would be lying if I called the central romantic story particularly engaging. However, I can't deny that Indira Varma's always-exposed, frequently-bare 23-year-old body is one of the most dazzling special effects I've seen in any movie lately. If there were a different actress in the role or more clothes on Indira, I freely admit my score would probably be 20 points lower.

I find it comical that in the "nude" scenes the lead had thick pubic hair when the Kama Sutra says that pubic hair should be shaved every week and that it is not sanitary to have sex with pubic hair (there is truth to that: no crabs, 20% less herpes etc). But the film wasn't bad it was a sad, stereo typical Romeo and Juliette style film with some good love scenes.

a fluffy sugar candy of Sexploitation spun around a thin spindle of a message for life: the pointlessness of sensory indulgence. But a film that successfully manages to be interesting while reversing this ratio, and one that I enjoyed much is Samsara (2001) http://www.criticker.com/film/Samsara/.

I guess this is pretty risque for Indian film. Not bad, but apart from the sex scenes it's not all that remarkable either.

Indira Varma (Rome) & Sarita Choudhury (Mississippi Masala) in nude love scenes. More than reason enough for any healthy, heterosexual man to watch, but the rest of the film is good, too, especially Indian superstar Rekha as the teacher of the art, & Naveen Andrews (of "Lost" fame) as the self centered & ill suited ruler. Although the plot takes place hundreds of years ago, the film is relevant on several levels- India's political castes, the woman's role in Indian society, sexuality, etc.

Two virgins Princess Tara and servant girl Maya destined to grow apart but sex as taught by the Kama Sutra. The objects of their affection, lecherous Raj Singh and brooding sculptor Jai defy belief. Raj is the sort of man who flares his nostrils when aroused. Even before her lessons in the art of love, Maya is instinctively more sensuous than Tara. Be imaginative in bed, girls, or the man in your life will stray.

A journey between a sexual space of power (game of power) and a sexual cosmos of control (attempts to spiral in mutual drawing-out between lovers), opened up by technics of sexual desire, in which the non-oppositional relationship between the two spaces is shown. Worth noting are Rasa's words about glory and humiliation between the queen and the mistress: has convention ever been daring and capable to truly think about what a mistress's glory could mean and what's behind it?
