Kakekomi

Long, dull, soapy and overacted.

Fascinating story of a convent of sorts looking after battered Japanese women in the 1800s is unfortunately told in a plodding, tonally uncertain way, with scenes of domestic violence and brutality sitting uneasily with some of the broader comic moments (though a scene involving a medical examination with the purient Mother Superior present is hysterically funny and beautifully executed). Ultimately too long and tedious to be a success, but does have some good moments and fine performances.
