Surprisingly well, I didn't expect much from this movie, but then found out an innovative world of a primitive civilization based on tree sap and the dark secret behind it. when it's scary it's scary, when it's touching it's touching and when it's imaginative it's like surfing an alien's brain neurons. kudos to the French.

Interesting, ambitious. I'd say it was influenced by "Angel's Egg" aesthetically, which I loved: the strange organic landscapes in this are really cool design. For me the story doesn't quite hold together, and has a kind of colonist-feeling ending. But if you liked "Angel's Egg" or "Land of the Lustrous" and want something that has something of that feeling, I'd suggest to give this a try! (watched English dub)

Tired and dreary anime tells a dull and convoluted adventure tale full of characters difficult to become invested in, enacted by a cast sounding as bored as their animated counterparts (only Dunst manages to bring some light to proceedings). Confounded further by hideously ugly, blocky animation, that looks like a reject from a very early PlayStation game.

I wanted to like Kaena, but almost every aspect of it is bad. Even for 2003, the animation resembles unfinished video game footage. There are questionable design choices, as well as lacking textures and fluidity; a problem amplified by the decision to make the antagonists liquid-based. The voice-cast appears impressive, but the dreary dialogue actively works against them. There are aspects of the plot that are interesting, but the delivery and ending make me reluctant to ever revisit this film.

After seeing the mediocre scores here and reviews elsewhere I didn't expect much from this, and 'not much' is what I got. I actually found the story to be somewhat enjoyable, and there's some nice imagery at times, but awkward animations and dialogue keep "Kaena" from surpassing its origin as a video game concept.

- might want to skip this one :: I thought this movie was a little older [2003 or before] and that made me think the animation was better than it is. Some of it is quite good, but some of it looks like bad video game graphics.
