Just Imagine

Just imagine: a very silly, very Broadway sort of thing, afflicted with the "early talkie" disease. With spiffy models of a future à la Metropolis, and a massive Martian idol hefting chorus girls about. Imagine too, Prohibition jokes, and a fair few about the chorus girls (and chorus boys). And musical numbers of little relevance, including one where our lovebirds play matchmakers for a pair of houseflies. Such, such is Just Imagine. Is it good? I imagine few would say so. But I had fun.

As prohibition wore on, Americans turned more and more to pharmaceutical medication for recreational uses, particularly those in the entertainment industry. In Hollywood, this trend had the side-effect of an increase in films such as this one which frightened and alarmed the general populace, thus largely contributing to the appeal of prohibition. They had good drugs in 1930.

Here's the pitch: A SF Musical Comedy about a world in which the Government chooses who you marry. This actually sounds like an interesting premise, doesn't it? Unfortunately, the premise is a lie, the music numbers are uniformly terrible and largely irrelevant to the plot, and the comedy isn't funny. On a side note, the summary on this movie's page is pretty inaccurate. The movie does not focus on the resurrected man; he's an incredibly annoying comic relief character.

This is the weirdest movie I've seen.

Badly dated, some good models of 1980 and the musical numbers are just odd. Still, worth checking out with some party drugs on hand
