When Madeleine (Davidtz), a British-born dealer in regional, "outsider" art, travels from Chicago to North Carolina to pursue a local painter for her gallery, she and her brand-new, younger husband George (Nivola) extend the trip to include an introduction to his family. Madeleine confronts the difficulty of two cultures colliding, and discovers the tumultuous outcome as these separate ways of life must coexist. (Sony Pictures Classics)

Indie subcultural study of what's hidden inside ourselves. Well acted with closely approached honesty.

One of the most critically overrated films ever. Boring and unfunny, with caricatures of the two "cultures": upscale New Yorkers vs. rural suburbanites bordering on insulting. Lots of critics loved this so you may too, but this may just be that they're just hip & pretentious enough to find the simple act of poking fun at wide-eyed (can you believe that word actually fits as a character description here?) rural suburbanites funny.

It effectively imparts an awkward tone and if nothing else it's true that Amy Adams really is terrific. She has a magnetic, electric screen presence like few other performers currently working. However, I really loathed every character except for Amy Adams and the protagonist Madeleine. They just came across as a bunch of pretty damn rude hicks. I don't know if that was the intention, but it sure didn't make me enjoy the film that much.

Another quirky indie drama. Adams is great and deserves the recognition she received for this role, the rest of the cast isn't bad, but the story feels so typical and safe that I have a hard time remembering elements to either condemn or praise.

Honest film about family and things that not always go the right way. The performances transmit the quiet tone of the film, and Amy Adams is brilliant as the one who represents hope.

I'm not sure where this movie went wrong. The first 70% was so cute and well-observed, a blackly comic slice of class-divide mockery. The performances were all on point and almost every scene was intriguing. Kind of like Woody Allen meets Napoleon Dynamite. Davidtz and Adams were particularly good in their roles. Then, the mood all changed and the characters got completely bogged down in morals. It could have been so much more fun if the third act had gone someplace new.

I certainly enjoyed this flick overall, but I didn't get as much out of it as I'd hoped to. Strange, because this sort of indie comedy is right in my wheelhouse, and I love Amy Adams. Some strong laughs and great characters, but also a tad tedious and overlong, in my book.

A friend of mine describes this as a depiction of the Red States and the Blue States. Normally, I don't care for films that feel like ethnographic case studies, but what makes this remarkable is the relatively even-handed approach the film takes towards both sides and the terrific acting, particularly by Davidtz and Adams.

A richly detailed and poignant portrait of an imperfect family trying to cope with the novelty of the presence of an outsider who has unexpectedly become part of the family. All the performances are great but Amy Adams deserves to be singled out for her sublime portrayal of the overeager pregnant wife who talks incessantly with forced cheerfulness to mask her insecurities.

As one might expect, Adams makes the film. A very sincere character study, not the cutesy quirky indie movie the poster and title might imply. Its tone perfectly captures the South, and never pokes fun.

I didn't mind the slow pace of the movie so much as I just didn't like any of its characters outside of Amy Adams'. It all just feels horribly awkward, which works for me in a movie like Match Point, but just makes this an off-putting experience overall. It doesn't feel like the movie likes its characters much either, but Amy Adams is absolutely brilliant here, and single-handedly makes it worth a look. Some of the other actors are very good as well, but overall, this just didn't do it for me.

It's a good thing they shot this in Winston-Salem, NC, because the filmmakers and cast nailed the accent and the feel of North Carolina. Amy Adams runs away with this movie and the rest of the cast can only hope to catch up.

Exactly what I thought it would be. Fractured family, quirky characters, bittersweet themes, minor tragedy, life lessons: standard Sundance bullshit that I'm totally sick of. I'd like to take all the Thumbsuckers and Tadpoles and Pieces of Aprils and Junebugs and dump them in a river somewhere. What really bugs me is how the writer and/or director have such thinly veiled contempt and condescention towards the characters and yet they try to make it look like sympathy and affection for them.

A surprisingly well done film that gets its characterization down pat. The subtleness of everything, the details, just a simple film done right. It's probably not for you if you watch the usual Will Ferrell or Adam Sandler crap, as you'll be bored by the pacing or miss the point of the movie. Scott Wilson's acting is spot on, and it's actually pretty funny in parts. Wonderful film.

This is a very impressive film from every angle. The acting is superb, the script is tight, and the direction and cinematography never distracts from the film. The characters are very complex but remain unimposing, gently provoking thought on a great variety of issues. I would highly recommend this film.

Of all the heartbreaking things in this fractured family drama that oozes resignation, regret and feels heavy with ghosts the one that hurts most is Amy Adams because she has the capacity to heal as well.
