Meryl Streep won the Golden Globe for this role and it is pretty clear to me that she does perform on a level unattainable to most actresses. She is always interesting to watch but the same cannot be said for this film. It was pretty damn boring, honestly.

The "Julia" moments are absolutely charming and delightful, she's a great character and Streep and Tucci have a wonderfully casual chemistry. Julie, however, comes off like a self-absorbed, whiny twit. They even address how self-absorbed she is in the movie, but that doesn't make watching her any more enjoyable. Julia Child is still a legend. No one will know or care who Julie Powell is in about 2 years. Watch the Julia moments, go get a snack when Julie's on (this movie makes you hungry).

Yes, it is choppy, but I have followed this story since it WAS a blog. The movie is good, but pair Nora Ephron with Meryl Streep and you're almost guaranteed a winner. Stanley tucci is very good and Amy Adams is wonderful.

In a weird experience I laughed more than anyone else in the theater constantly elbowed and shushed by my date. I would love to say Streep was spot on but really don't know anything about Child. Her voice and mannerisms were hilarious. The onion scene early on had me almost out of my chair. Adams was good and had her funny moments too. One problem I had was that it started to drag about 2/3rds in. If you are going to go over 2hrs you need to do a much much better job wrapping things up.

Ephron forces poor Adams 2 play her role in Meg Ryan's hand-me-downs: the self-absorbed, emotionally needy cutie-pie. Somehow this appeals 2 women. Streep fares better since Julia is looking 4 meaning & perhaps success, instead of Julie's vice-versa modern-take, but no less 1-note. A zest4 life does not a role make. Unless ur a "foodie" or fan of Ephron's cloying "humor" , neither narrative - mostly banal & uneventful attempts 2 get published - will resemble entertainment.

One of the funniest movies I've seen this year. Great performances, especially from Streep, but that's expected by this point, right? I'll agree that the Julia Child bits were better than the Julie Powell bits, but I enjoyed both stories immensely.

A "nice" movie with "nice" characters but not much story. As much as I am a fan of cookery, blogging, Meryl Streep, Amy Adams et al, I felt like this film was held back, nay, crippled, by its parallel narratives structure. It just made the film feel overly long and destroyed the momentum at too many key moments. Also, each half felt too lightweight - like eating a salad and a sorbet when what you really wanted to order was the hearty Boeuf Bourguignon main course.

Surprisingly good. I love to cook, and this movies portrait of food is great. Streep was annoying, Messina looked disgusting when he ate, but Amy Adams was good. And Stanley Tucci has the ability to play the worlds most likeable guy. Everymovie should feature Tucci. He is one of the best supporting actors in the world.

Charmant. well constructed intertwining of the two stories. Amy Adams is adorable, and Meryl Streep captures what I assume is an accurate portrail of the very expressive Julia Childs. Bon Apetite!

Let woman use Internet, and she will do something as stupid as writing the blog about how she cooks. Let woman make movies, and she will do something as stupid as making a film about a woman who is allowed to use the Internet to post her blog about cooking. Nah, just kidding;) Or not?

Great. Streep, Tucci and cohorts create a magically wonderful ménage of intensely likable characters in a wonderfully old Paris. And its about food. Unfortunately the segments with Amy Adams, though enjoyable at first, become dreary and just drag everything down, she ends up feeling like a female Matthew Broderick desperately trying to be cute. Thankfully you can just fast-forward through her parts without effecting the narrative. Recommended.

Two movies for the price of one, but could have done without Julie's story, her part is extremely boring. Never understood how people can be so passioned about cooking, but Julia's story -aka Streep's perfomance - helped of a lot. Almost made me buy a cooking book and start cooking.

Julie Powell's character is wholly uninteresting, I cannot believe anyone read her blog as it's written in the most annoying way imaginable, I cannot care about her love problems as the marriage is portrayed as perfect until they appear out of thin air, Streep's voice is far over the top (even the SNL routine showed in the film with someone doing Julia Child features a less over the top voice), I mean really. Still, it's pretty good, and I enjoyed it somehow. Stanley Tucci is outstanding.

If you're into cooking, character studies and talented actresses this is for you. This second pairing of the two, who do not appear on screen together, doesn't have the impact of "Doubt", but very worth seeing nonetheless. If you're a guy, be prepared to be in a minuscule minority, but man up in order to keep yourself well rounded. This isn't a man marginalizing chick flick. And yes, it does include the Dan Aykroyd SNL skit which is still funny as hell after all these years.

Partially a charming feel-good movie with a delightful Meryl Streep in great chemistry with Stanley Tucci, partially an obnoxious, uninteresting mess with unlikable characters. A very pleasant picture serving two distinct dishes made from the delicate but delicious-if-done-right recipe of relationships, ambition, and personal passion. The cast is excellent (though Streep is the clear star with her hilarious and effortlessly charming Julia) and the multi-faceted writing is well-balanced (the letter/blog voiceovers add a wonderful warm butter-like flavour to savour throughout), with Eric's sudden departure and the "Julia hates me" thread left hanging the only missteps.

Nora Ephron's last film is most likely her best (Harry just doesn't do it fr me.) Utilising her skills of high concept and parallel storytelling, she tells a very entertaining and frothy tale that goes down like buttery bread. The food looks delicious and Streep and Tucci have an idyllic relationship that is a joy to watch. The Adams' side of the story is a little less successful but the pacing was very comforting and thoughtful. I love the flourishes of the recipe books getting stained as well.

There is half of a great movie in Julie & Julia. Strong one is Julia's part. Finding herself in cook and her passion about it well shown. But the Julie part is a bit weak. Her emotional transitions rushed and this part shown like the grey version of the Julia's part. Other than it is a warm tale and have 90's movies spirits.

Julie & Julia is interesting enough to fill its 2 hour runtime, though doesn't do anything particularly well. Streep captures Child's privileged eccentricity, though the period piece portion that is her story isn't that interesting. However I was more enamoured by Adams and Messina story, which seemed more grounded; though this might be the benefit of Adams portraying the author of the adapted novel. The cooking scenes are more dish presentation. Decent light entertainment.

watched this movie on Netflix sometime last summer when I was at loose ends. I like Amy Adams but the plot honestly did not sound interesting; I don't really like biographical movies as a genre. I thought, do I really need to watch Meryl Streep impersonate Julia Child for 2 hours? Which is basically what it amounted to, although it was really only half the movie that was historical/biographical, and the other half was Amy Adams being kind of silly. Overall, diverting but not impressive to me

Two intercut stories: Julia Child (Meryl Streep) becomes a celebrity via her enthusiastic advocacy of French cooking, first in print and then on television; decades later, Julie Powell (Amy Adams) gains a modicum of fame blogging about cooking her way through Child's cookbook. The segments with Streep are pleasant enough (and Streep mimics Child as well as you'd expect), but those with Adams are so tiresome and pointless as to drag the whole enterprise down into mediocrity.

Caught this on Netflix a week ago when I was looking for something cheerful. Definitely got what I was looking for. The performances were quite good (every actor here is skilled, not just Streep, and Tucci is the unsung hero) but the unnecessary fights between Adams and Messina really bogged the whole film down. I get that they added that so there'd be more conflict but, honestly, there were other sources for conflict that would have seemed less forced.

Is it possible for a thinking person to sit through a Nora Ephron flick without experiencing several waves of nausea? Unsurprisingly, this is Streep's movie--her imitation of Julia Child is stunning, and her skill and charm make it all work somehow, even when it has no right to. Insipid, simplistic writing and TV-style directing would have rendered this completely unwatchable were it not for Streep and the male leads--the wonderful Stanley Tucci and the earnest-yet-decorative Chris Messina.

Amy Adams is very charming and entertaining, Meryl Streep is also convincing as Julia Childs. A dual timeline, one about the life of Julia Childs and the other a young Julie who blogs as she cooks her way through all the recipes from Julia's cookbook. Despite a seemingly boring subject the movie is both engaging and entertaining. Amy Adams is marvelously gorgeous and cute throughout. Streep effectively captures the flavor of Julia Childs. One half of the film has so outshines the other that it's a wonder Ephron didn't jettison the blogger altogether. She certainly doesn't have any idea what to do with that story. The portion of the film that follows Child is often delightfu, especially because of Streep's inspired work as the legendary chef. She gets the mannerisms down, but that's easy part. Streep also nails the far trickier challenge of convincingly tapping into the ebullient thrill that Child gets out of life and food.

One of Meryl Streep's greatest performances makes this an entertaining and rewarding watch, but I didn't sympathize much with modern-day blogger, Julie (though I find her idea of cooking every recipe in Child's cookbook fascinating). The Julia Child back story is much more interesting and Streep's chemistry with Stanley Tucci is as genuine as movie relationships can get. Interesting subject matter, but presented in an unnecessarily frivolous manner. This movie could have been for everyone, but Ephron steals it away from the men by making it thoroughly a chick flick. What a waste. It has funny moments to be sure, and Amy Adams is adorable, but there should be much more cooking in this alleged cooking movie and less cooing and gurgling between the couples. A pity.

Charming performances--particularly by Streep--but a bit more than that. It is a film about two women finding their true voices.
