This picture exemplifies the hood drama mix of hip-hop narratives & traditional cinematic storytelling. Tupac is the real star here, as he wonderfully translates his performance skills into the psychopathic Bishop. He's obviously having fun playing the bad guy, while simultaneously empathizing with his choices. Dickerson, as a DP turned director, makes some cool visuals--especially in the DJ battle. Like most flicks of the era, the soundtrack is more known. Still, the movie shouldn't be ignored.

This was surprisingly good. Tupac gets a lot of attention for his performance; early on he seemed ridiculous, but once the plot began to flesh itself out, his character became subversive and insane. It's a damn good performance. And I like how this movie plays out; it's split in half, the first half consisting of lighthearted banter and character development, the second fleshing out the conflict. Dickerson was Spike Lee's cinematographer, and Lee's influence is clear.

This is a perfectly adequate film. It spends the first act setting up it's characters, and there isn't much depth to them, but they'll do and the actors are just fine. (This might be Sharkur's best performance.) When things go wrong, you can pretty much guess what's going to happen ... and it happens. Samuel L. Jackson and Queen Latifah liven up the proceedings a bit.

This film has a good cast, there are several good performance here. The script has some very good moments with some predictable scenes. Overall I would recommend this drama.

Epps is great and Tupac was surprisingly good. I think this is an underrated thriller with great characters. The beginning pulled me in with just a look at their regular lives and then throws in the stick up which brings the suspension. The soundtrack is also pretty great.

Loses any pretense to realism in the last half hour, but still a pretty good thriller.

Tupac was not revered for his acting, and for good reason, but much of the cast is indeed strong, led by a hugely charming Omar Epps, and far above-average DP-turned-director Ernest Dickerson does justice to a tight, fast-paced account of ruined expectations and insufficient choices in urban centers.

This is a pretty good hood film. Tupac's performance suggest that he could've been an accomplished actor if he wanted to be. It has a great gritty hip-hop vibe with a slamming soundtrack and it has that special tension and emotion that only a good hood film can achieve. However, it's not without its problems. I didn't like how the ending played out, for example, though the freeze-frame works well.

This is the forgotten black-youth-urban-drama from the early 90s. It does feel different as it almost takes on a horror aspect as the plot goes on. This isn't surprising with Dickerson at the helm. It continues to sadden me watching a Tupac performance. He had such energy.

A pretty average movie upped by some great aspects. While the story and direction may have been somewhat unfocused, Epps and Shakur as well as their characters delivered greated performances and stole the show. This as well as a cool hip-hop sound track make for a pretty good movie if youre in the right mood.

I was excited when I finally saw this and was very disappointed. Tupac plays a great villian who gets eaten up by the game. Its just no where near the level of Menace or Boyz In the Hood
