about the death of punk? a smashup of les carabiniers and sweet movie? i dunno, but this is undeniably a complete mess of politics, plot, and acting. somehow manages to be enjoyable all thrown together. the two aforementioned films are definitely much better. i finally joined MUBI because i saw trash humpers was on there, and this is my second. not quite as good. also another criterion check!

The first film from the Criterion Collection I feel is completely worthless. It felt like a cult Rocky Horror Picture Show, or a failed film student's attempt at Bunuel. The acting is brazenly awful, but the actors don't have much to work with: the dialogue is didactic and harsh, and without meaning. Its absurdity would be valid if it didn't believe so violently in its political purpose.

A complete waste of time. The British punk equivalent of John Waters: low budget production, deviant characters living in a state of anarchy, a heavy dose of ironic bad taste, and truly awful acting. The key difference is that Waters has a good sense of humor, and Jarman doesn't. Furthermore, Jarman takes his political bullshit far too seriously. These folks are constantly spewing their ridiculous, boring, adolescent polemic at each other.

Can’t say I don’t admire the willingness to stick it in the eye of the punk scene of the time but kind of a redundancy in the way making comedy about trump is when the thing you’re making fun of is funny enough. Give me a full movie of the poetic queen stuff that bookends the movie. Spinning the diamond come on now

a great yet disjointed atmosphere film where sudden bursts of wild fun and mockery make the rest bearable.

Clumsy & unengaging. Dunno if this tries to be insightful, shocking, satirical, poetic or amusing but it fails at any of the above. It was probably more pointed back then but the commentary on punk scene seems a bit shallow (also I'm easily repelled by such direct forms of art about artistic/cultural movements). I should hate on this more but I find something sympathetic in Jarman's careless ambition. It has a distinct aplocalyptic 70s roughness & makes great use of the rundown urban locations.

If nothing else, you have to appreciate Jarman's ambition and style, but this is rather an incoherent mess of undeveloped ideas coasting mostly on its anarchic and rebellious spirit. That being said, it has plenty of that to spare.

I love the few short scenes spent with Elizabeth which are delightfully overwritten with a lovely poetic quality, and as always I am fascinated by Jarman's style, all grotesque and excessive. Unfortunately much of the stuff set in the alternate future is annoying with some grating characterisations, very weak performances and an irritating tendency towards didacticism with characters being prompted to spout out their beliefs which results in much of the dialogue feeling clunky and awkward.

The politics may have dated, but that's what happens when punk died but the world around it didn't die with it. Jubilee is still a heady brew that frustrates but is successful in its abrasiveness. Thankfully Greg Araki and The Doom Generation covered the nineties in the same mindset as this and covered the gap after punk vanished.

Wow! What a didactic and boring piece of crap! There's no storyline, no plot, no acting, nothing. Even its absurdity doesn't help to make it better. Grotesque!
