This movie is inspired by a true story, which occurred in the trenches of the World War I battlefield on Christmas Eve in 1914. When war breaks out in the lull of summer 1914, it surprises and pulls millions of men in its wake. Christmas arrives, with its snow and multitude of family and army presents. But the surprise won't come from inside the generous parcels which lie in the French, Scottish, and German trenches. (imdb)

Really solid film that drives home the silliness of war in a unique way.

Sentimental but poignant. Does reasonable justice to the source material, but lays the sugar on fairly thick.

An amazing war film, and the multiple languages adds to the realisim a great aspect, some great acting and truly spellbinding direction. It is beyond me why there haven't been more movies portraying world war one.

The human inside people crawled out from thick, hardened skin of soldiers, too busy channeling their negativity towards each other to really feel themselves. For the country, for the king, for the tzar, for the queen, for our homes, so they said. What happened in the winter of year 1914 is the worst fear of every leader leading a war. They must not allow people to feel other people 'cus they can realize who they're fighting for, thus propaganda, strict hierarchy and punishment of such behaviour.

a neat retelling of the WWI christmas truce. It's a touching movie. A little touchy feely and french but it's done well and looks fantastic.

There are a lot of slow sections and the movie lacks a conventional plot but there are just enough moments of pure humanity and enough character from the large cast that make it worth watching.

(Rewatch. Diane Kruger played a much lesser role than I'd remembered. The relationship between the three frontline commanders was more interesting than the romance. Fav scene: the first foray into No Man's Land carrying a Christmas tree, then the bagpipers responding.) Literally a war on Christmas.

Let's pretend I didn't already know the story because of a fascination I have with this most pointless war, and that I don't totally have a thing for If-you-need-a-German-actress-call-Diane Kruger. What's left is...just...meh. It tries so hard but feels so flat. I can't really see how anyone with no prior interest in the subject matter can be won over by it.

This is an enjoyable and very different Christmas film. The cast does a good job in the movie. The script is different and original and not what you would expect from a war or Christmas film. I would recommend this interesting foreign film.

The poignant humanity on display in Joyeux Noel makes its sentimentality forgivable.

Joyeux Noël is a fabulous film. There is never a dull moment, and after the first 45 minutes, which establish the scenario the characters find themselves in. The film is an incredibly emotional experience, with every frame after a certain part hitting quite hard -- despite the general tone being very light and happy. This is based on a true story, and it deserves to be as sentimental as possible. I really enjoyed Joyeux Noël, and I definitely recommend it.

A trifle too sentimental, and a bit contrived, but not without strengths, especially in the acting.

A very decent try to show the brutal face of the war. Quite an usual look at the war thematic.

It's a really touching film that shows that there can be real humanity in wartime and that we're all the same - human. I really liked that the war was shown from different perspectives, not just one side, like a lot of war films. It had great performances, nice cinematography and real heart to it.

An extremely unique film, one of the best "war" flicks I've come across in recent memory. The pacing is kind of a mess, but it's easy to overlook it with some great acting and an inspirational message that sticks with the viewer after the film. A nice supporting role from Kruger as well.

An quite interesting historical event drawn out far too much. The movie suffers from extremly bad pacing and editing; other than that it's an ejoyable experience.

Beyond the story contrivances and loose interpretation of historic events, Joyeux Noel manages to become an uplifting film about the spirit of Christmas and brotherly love among men that are far from kin.

Interesting story, some decent acting. The forced recommencement of war after the festivities is painful to consider. But, the lip-synching is indeed bad and terribly distracting - took me out of the movie a few times.
