Oscar-bait has reached a new low with this slavishly generic and mediocre rags-to-riches story. This might be the worst script I've seen in a major movie since 50 Shades of Grey. Goes to show that famous names are all you need to secure award nominations, what a farce. PS: Joy Mangano was the executive producer to this, a movie about herself. I'll guess that's why her character has zero flaws and every other character is an obstacle. Surely it's everyone else's fault, right?

Well, this movie is... underwhelming? Close to dissappointing? I dunno, I just expected so much more, and I got so little. Jennifer Lawrence is stellar, as always, and she carries this whole movie because other than her, there's not much to it, honestly (poor writing, weak plot). But sadly not even that could save it for me.

The Golden Globes are such a sham, this is barely a comedy, with the only real funny moments belonging to the soap opera scenes (that probably didn't need to be here). Although this film ends up being a pretty simplistic tale of a woman becoming incredibly financially successful, watching her journey to get there is often very enjoyable and inspiring, mostly thanks to some pretty good dialogue, inspired directing, and another wonderful performance from Lawrence.

Ah, home shopping. Without your Flow-bees and cultured pearls my great aunt might have died in a Kitano-esque yakuza shootout or a tragic space shuttle explosion rather than on the couch waiting for the right time to order another heavy-duty mayonnaise spatula (and if you order now, we'll throw in another free (plus shipping and handling (some restrictions may apply))).

A strange mish-mash that left me wondering what the hell they were going for. It has its enjoyable moments, but the movie is not made just to be enjoyable. That's evident by the strange, often somewhat difficult stylistic choices that were made. At first I was curious how it would all come together, but in the end I have to conclude that it simply never did for me. Joy is a movie that's never quite on point, be it in terms of style, emotions, acting or otherwise, that ends up rather unsatisfying

This isn't a bad script as much as it is a comedy script that isn't treated as such. Perhaps only out of force of habit, Russell and the entire cast treat it like the most dramatic, emotional thing that's ever been created. The dead grandma narration is almost incomprehensibly unnecessary. Still gets a good number of points since my experience consisted of me audibly chuckling and enjoying myself in an otherwise silent theater.

Joy is one of the most underwhelming films of 2015. Out loud this seems like a laughable true story to warrant a film adaption. But to be fare the story of Joy Mangano is quite a remarkable one. However this is a really lazy effort from David O. Russell and the writing in particular is poor. And all of the supporting characters are flawed & unlikebale. The only saving grace though, is yet another impressive leading performance from Jennifer Lawrence and she carries & elevates Joy dramatically.

For a movie called joy, almost all the characters are unlikable. Jennifer Lawrence carries this movie with an Oscar worthy performance, but that's the only good thing I can say about the movie. At this point, David O. Russell needs to do something different, his characters feel the same and his stories are getting worse and worse.

It was too messy right from the opening scene, the narrative did not fit the tone of the film. It swayed from comedy to needlessly dark subject matter and back but never allowed the pivotal scenes to grow the main character. Lawrence did what she could with the lead character but it was not her best work. This film lacked any substantial reason to cling to the premise and want to know what happens next. It told a very simplistic story, but one that never strayed away from convention.

a broken down jennifer lawrence glugs cough syrup and tragically dreams an ideal reality. not what's intended (he wants a snowglobe fairytale feel is all), but the only explanation for the jarring oscillations between classic russell (i.e. increasingly self-parodic familial chaos) and a stilted, eerie disconnect, helped by some bafflingly awkward camera placement. then there's the uber-literal script complete with feminism-by-numbers, the unbelievably rushed last act, etc. super misguided.

David O. Russell seems to live in a territory where nobody questions or challenges any of his decisions. Awful direction at its finest. Probably an appropriate score. Joy features what is without a doubt one of Jennifer Lawrence's best performances to date and she really brings the character to life. David O. Russell's directing is still beautiful and well-done, but... I'm not sure if this was his kind of movie. I felt like he struggled to bring the truly inspiring story to life in some respects, so the tone was a little challenging to follow for some, All in all, pretty decent movie and a great showcase for Jennifer Lawrence.

How Joy (2015) unfolded was like a Hallmark TV-movie with major actors. Without the charismatic presence of Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper, Isabella Rossellini and whoever else was here, this would have been a very thin experience. It was already rushed and under-developed, but thanks to the charms of those involved it became a pleasurable one, even with the truly weak confrontation with the Texan ruining the experience a lot.

I was shocked at how much I enjoyed this, given the reviews it's getting. I really dug the super-oddball way this relatively simple story was told - this is just David O. Russell having fun kinda fucking around with tone, in a movie about the woman who made the miracle mop, of all things. It's probably not as good a movie as my score, but I enjoyed the hell out of it, in all its glorious weirdness.

Jennifer Lawrence totally makes this movie work. Her performance makes this film enjoyable. The script also works because you really side with her and feel her frustrations. Where this struggled a little bit for me was the flow. I liked the majority of it, but I felt like it got a little too lazy at times and the narration was not needed.

Joy will likely not rake in the Oscars the previous two collaborations did. The story is strangely disjointed--a somewhat surreal comedy at first that slowly morphs into a family/business drama. But Russell still shows off his eye for the humorously ludicrous here, and Lawrence and Cooper (though the latter is very much a supporting star, despite the prominence of his name in the advertising) are as charismatic as ever. I'm not as hard on this one as everyone else. While it's part of O. Russell's more forgettable filmography, his energetic eye was still captivating for two hours, and Jennifer Lawrence gives another knockout performance. Everyone around her, however, are direly in need of character development. The motives of anyone but Joy is suspect and unclear throughout the entire film.

So disastrous on so many levels that I can't even believe anyone let this be released. It's a shame that someone as talented as Jennifer Lawrence has tethered herself to David O. Russell, especially because they seem to bring out the worst in each other; each successive collaboration between them has somehow been worse than the one before it. The idea of a follow-up to Joy sends shivers down my spine.

An audiovisually dynamic work that presents the possibility of compatibility between success and grace in the cutthroat world of business. Open competition doesn't come with a license for amorality and borderline sadism. It's an admittedly small endeavor from a guy we've apparently come to expect big things from, but when a director can present QVC in such a cinematic way, well then, I find it hard to believe that Russell is losing his mojo.

Joy is a passable movie that should have been better. It suffers from some pacing and tonal issues, as well as annoying family drama and less-than-stellar acting from anyone not named Jennifer Lawrence. This is a story that I now believe should have been made into a feature-length movie, but I'm not convinced this was the crew to do it. This is an inspirational and empowering movie that's bogged down by things that likely didn't need to be there.

Entertaining but flawed. The script is the weak link here. More often than not, the characters just announce the intended take-away from the scene, trampling on any potential subtext, and the plot structure felt aimless (more than usual for a biopic). Most of its issues really do stem from the writing, and I'd like to think it could've been something special with a tight, nuanced script. Sadly, it reads like squandered potential from start to finish.

This movie didn't bring me any... Yes, Lawrence did do a good performance and David O. Russell got his tag-along cast together to make another Oscar-esque film. I just didn't fall in love with this movie. It just has a depressing tone from nearly the start to finish. I felt bad for Joy when things were tough, and I was starting to like her a lot when she was doing well. The bad part is, for most of the movie things are going horrible for her and her new invention the self-wringing mop...

Uneven tone and inconsistent characterisation. The Joy/Peggy relationship should be the dynamic driving the story but O Russell instead chooses the far less interesting grandmother as the principal relationship, even clunkily employing her as a narrator. Her death scene is weightless and is testament to the lack of significance of that storyline, not that the more dramatically relevant 'showdown' climax has any more heft either.

Lawrence is great but unbelievably young for the role, but her acting chops are still as potent as ever. The movie really fails a great deal due to inconsistencies in storytelling, an unbalanced ensemble, and huge issues with pacing. I wanted to like this film, but found myself checking out regularly while questioning why this script wasn't shortened in so many ways. Russell and Lawrence truly need to part ways as others have said. While she is very talented, she was greatly miscast here.

The movie would suck if not for Lawrence's meaningful grasp on her character, which she best displays when interacting with anyone whose name is not on the movie poster. Dascha Polanco as Joy's best friend since childhood is the only actor who seems to exist in the same plane as Lawrence, so when they're sharing screen time, the movie feels real and normal. The much put-upon Joy (Jennifer Lawrence) finally finds success as the inventor of a self-wringing mop, but is again failed by those around her and must fight to secure a happy ending. Surprisingly, Joy's sufferings do not become insufferable, in large part due to Lawrence's magnificent performance--her best and most mature to date. The rest of the film is fairly uneven, the scenes dealing with QVC and a sympathetic producer (Bradley Cooper) being by far the most compelling.

There was a lot about the film that was mediocre, but it still managed to somehow hold my interest. Looking back, the film seemed odd. Something about all of it was off. Extra points for Jennifer Lawrence. A good & mostly interesting semi-true story about a woman's creativity & stubborn persistence for believing in herself. I particularly liked that she refused to accept defeat & took matters into her own hands to succeed time & again. Beyond the initial setup, the family drama was a distraction. Well known supporting cast, but none were particularly vital or impressive, except for perhaps Bradley Cooper. A mostly interesting & inspiring story.

It brings out the best in Russell and Lawrence to show Joy fighting to retain her humor and humanity in a world of crass commercialism. But there's no teeth in Russell's bite this time.
