The influential (and still much-revisited to this day) trench drama makes its first film appearance fresh off the West End with director and lead in tow. A talky two-hour character piece on the mentally destructive nature of it all as it plays our lead's turn to alcohol and snappily defensive self-loathing against his fiancée's naive brother and a mentor so avuncular everyone calls him "Uncle". Ultimately, neither the booze nor the Public School spirit much cut it as avenues of escape.

This film is a one-scene play made as a movie. It all takes place in the bunker. Shot in 1930, it was dealing with the scars still felt from the first world war.

Unjustly forgotten, a great debut for Whale, showing the moody visual style his Frankenstein would define a genre with the next year. Clive is great, scene-commanding and tragic, backed by a fine supporting cast.
