Hopelessly dated, incredibly cheesy, interminably slow-paced, and casually sexist. Perhaps you feel that's all part of its charm, but you have to wade through a lot of goofiness before getting to the '50s-era special effects - ostensibly the reason you're watching this in the first place.

When the duck is the smartest character you have a few problems.

It's been a while since I read the book, but I'm pretty sure it didn't include all this silly singing. This is honestly quite a bad film and it definitely has not aged well. The lizard-monsters were hilarious though.

I really hope the ideas of the book were outdated in 1959, but judging by how the screenplay is interwoven with rampant misogyny and delusions of aristocratic privilege, and one of the main characters being a duck, that might not be the case.

Very dated in almost every detail, and has a weird tone that lurches from serious action-adventure to knock-about comedy farce. But still, Verne wrote some really classic sci-fi while everyone was still figuring out what sci-fi was, and the story, while ludicrous, still stands up.

It's really all about the production design with our stars exploring weird caverns. They encounter some dinosaurs, but they are just iguanas with some paint and a big cardboard fin. The real draw is Mason, who's always magnificent to watch. Boone is serviceable, but he's supposed to be Scottish, which is a laugh. (He apparently sang several songs, but most of them were cut.) There's also a duck.

It's both dated (a woman on MY expedition!) and silly (Lizards Of Unusual Size). But it's fun enough. Justice for Gertrude though.

It's precisely what I hoped it would be from scanning the poster: kitschy, visually delightful, and gleefully unconcerned with any pretenses of scientific rigor. Could have trimmed fifteen minutes or so from the setup, but whatever. Really enjoyed it.

James Mason goes a long way in making this for large chunks dull movie, that mostly is just people walking, watchable.

eng; [journey to the center of the earth]; ein professor entdeckt einen weg zum mittelpunkt der erde und startet dafür in island, doch andere entdecker beanspruchen den diesen weg für sich und versuchen ihn aufzuhalten - eine fantastische reise beginnt; (sehr romantische sicht auf die abenteuerliche reise);

Certainly not that great in todays standards. However Jules Verne's incredible imagination is reflected wonderfully considering the year it was shot... Besides it can be used as the dictionary definition for misoginy:)

A sentimental favourite that I am probably over-rating. The film is quite formulaic, but well-paced and entertaining. Excellent special effects for its time.

For its time it is great. Interesting story, follows the source material, and some decent acting without getting too campy.

Kind of goofy and lots of fun to watch. For heaven's sake, it's got James Mason and Arlene Dahl in it! And Pat Boone as the sometimes shirtless young clean-cut studly guy! Plus there's a duck! What more do you want? The kind of film that really livened up a Saturday afternoon in the far-off days before cable and VCRs.

It sure feels dated (way too much jolly singing), but it was way more entertaining than I expected it to be. Unlike big time adventure movies of today this movie focuses on story and characters (loved James Mason as misogynist professor) and in this regard it feels closer to Verne book than any adaptation I have previously seen. Set design is great. best use of painted lizzards I have ever seen.

Everything about this movie is dated: the science, the production values, the quality of acting, everything. But for me there is a very, very strong nostalgia value to it.

One of my first sci-fi movies. Haven't seen it in a long time but when I was young I loved it because of all the monsters and strange, mysterious locations and creatures. A classic adventure movie.
