Critics trashed this, yet 21 Jump Street does the same thing a decade later and it gets smothered in praise. Hmm. Many great satires come too close to their targets for idiots to identify the difference, and that's the case here. At the same time, how people miss it when the code for a Rock Star Plane Crash is "take the Chevy to the levee" is beyond me. One more script polish might have been beneficial, but it's immeasurably better than it has any right to be.

Unreal in how accurately it sends up modern youth. Satire packaged as teen movie, the jokes open up with repeated viewings.

Watching (or rather spitting on) this is the equivalent sum to taking a huge dump in the toilet. Man, was this one of the most awfully-made, wretched portion of taken-out dog dropping ever made, and the people that were even slightly involved in making this should earn the wrath of every faithful man on this earth.

A lot better than its reputation. It knows its satire, but I am unsure if the audience fully understood. Like, I saw this when it came to video, and I remember really disliking it. But, I was also a dumb teen. This is also a blast of nostalgia, in a world where pop punk still felt like the antithesis to boy/girl groups.

I'm not going to pretend like the movie's satire is genius, or even consistent, but this is still a smarter flick than people give it credit for. As an indictment of the entertainment industry, it's great. The only problem is that it often becomes what it's indicting, in part to beat you over the head with irony, but also to whore itself to teenage girls. Posey and Cumming are very entertaining, and "Du Jour" is pretty fucking hilarious. Not as bad as its reputation, but not great either.

extremely underrated. This movie's message is about the corruption of the music and media industry, and the friendship at the mercy of it.

The first two-thirds of the year 2001 were a unique moment in American culture. I'm very glad to be over two decades away from there, even if the world has kind of imploded in the meantime. But it's good to have a time capsule like this, a picture of a time when everyone was doing satire and no one knew what satire was, to remind ourselves that it wasn't just a fever dream.

It's a funny parody about the commercial society we live and celebrity-culture. The songs are weirdly catchy.

Criticker thought I'd give this movie a 24. Bwah? I was a fan of the comics as a kid, and I just had an absolute ball watching this. The music was catchy, the satire both silly and biting, and it's a great little time capsule of the turn of the milennium.

Not cinematic gold, but it's a cute, funny movie. As a satire, it doesn't take itself too seriously, which I like.

Call it a guilty pleasure if you like but I think this is better then it gets credit for. It did just enough to be more engaging then a typical teenage girl romcom and sometimes that's all I need.

A lot better than I remembered from when I was I guess 12 or whatever but definitely not fully on board with the critical reevaluation - a lot of the jokes fall flat and there’s too much actual product placement for the satire to have any bite. But it has a lot of really fun performances and did make me laugh a fair few times. Missi Pyle is the secret MVP

As a reader of the comics millennia ago, I feel like I should give this an F. Pretending it has no association with the wholesome Archie comic, I'd rate it about average. It's a silly satire on pop music and modern consumerism that has more of a theme than a credible plot. But I did laugh a few times while wondering what Eisenstein would have thought about a movie that had product placement between all those montages.

Brash and silly comedy is perhaps not quite sharp enough to be deemed a satire, but there is more than meets the eye in some of the ostensible throwaway gags and setups, which if nothing else capture the turn-of-the-century bubble-gum pop scene remarkably well. Fired by good natured performances from Cook, Dawson and Reid (inspiring Seyfried’s Mean Girl?), and some cake-walking from Cumming and Posey having a blast as the maniacal villains. 5 extra points for “Du Jour” (and their band members!)

Strange flick, it's like the filmmaker's couldn't decide what kind of movie they wanted to make or for what demographic, and ultimately seems lost. Mostly gets points for me for the wonderfully delicious Dawson.

Don't get me wrong, this movie is terrible. It's a poor script piled on top of way too many bright colours to distract you and a generally mediocre cast. And yet, it works. Or maybe I've just been brainwashed. Which will totally make sense once you've seen the movie.

What piqued my interest for this movie was this video on YouTube: "Josie and the Pussycats - Illuminati Mind Control, Subliminal Messages, and Truth in Fiction" Yes, I know, I KNOW. Can a teenage movie reveal all the secrets of how showbiz manipulates us? Hell no, but it's *very* entertaining nonetheless.

Being of a certain age (shut up in the cheap seats) .. I remember the 70's animated version which seems a much better way of watching this ... it only lasts 10 minutes which was as much as I could take of this film without the overwhelming desire to knaw my own arm off! A two minute joke crammed into 100 minutes

This is pretty good fun, Parker & Alan, however upstage & walk off with the show, which is okay except that it makes it less of a Josie & Co. thing which one might imagine would be what the movie was about by the title & all. Now the other point is to advertise advertise advertise at an unprecedented level. An attempt is made to render this advertising acceptable by the do your own thing moral & brainwash story which fails in that it rings hollow, not really making the advertising unattractive.

I'm ashamed to say I enjoyed it more than I should have. It's juvenile, formulaic and simply not very good but there is some fun to be derived from it if you take it as a parody of sorts.
