Johnny Handsome

With this pretty phenomenal cast and Walter Hill at the helm, this film should work like gangbusters, but it only barely works. The problem is that you damn well know Rourke is going to go after Henriksen and Barkin, and you don't just know because you know how movies like this work ... you know because everyone in the movie just repeatedly tells you he's going after them.

On the relationship between appearance and identity and the impossibility of escaping your past and starting anew. The themes aren't explored in any great depth, but they are somewhat unexpected in this context, especially as Hill doesn't tend to trade in psychology. Johnny's melancholy doom laden fate is quite subtly suggested via moody lighting and dank interiors, which become increasingly prominent as it progresses. Rourke leaves an impression, and the action is hard edged.

The charm of this film, especially as an American action movie from 1989, is that it takes a level-headed gaze at the natural progression of its character. It is strange how Walter Hill's intensely dark and violent dramatic thriller is given little to no reference literature, hardly anyone has heard of it, is all in all a buried treasure. Not that many movies have the utter nostalgia, ruefulness and grit that this movie evokes throughout.

Lance Henriksen is Lance Henriksen in Lance Henriksen. Rourke today kinda looks like Johnny Handsome pre-op, neat!

I love you, Lance Henriksen! Kudos to Ry Cooder too for a pretty rad score.

One of those films I know I've seen but I can't really remember it. I do remember the deformed part, though. Until I chance upon a second viewing, my PSI it is.

Fun cast and a great Mickey Rourke role go a long way here.
