Atkinson's charm would embue all but the tackiest of the jokes and slapstick with appreciable humour but for the sheer number of weaker efforts on the page. Ultimately an effective package, but only due to its inimitable star, and only just.

It started off like a decent spy comedy, but it fast tracked to awkward and uncomfortable. The skits are predictable and stale and the supporting roles can't bring even a sympathetic laugh.

I suppose the comedy's not for everyone, but the "supremely confident yet inescapably incompetent" schtick of Atkinson's titular character, while basically the entire film, never failed to make me laugh (a couple small highlights: his failed coat-throw, botched final romantic gesture), and his chemistry with long-suffering straight man Bough is delightful. The ridiculous plot, of course, leaves things to be desired (Sauvage's sudden burst of anger provides a much too convenient resolve).

"Johnny English" is a hysterically funny, prototypical spy film spoof. The titular hero is monumentally, no-holds-barred daft and that results in countless hilariously awkward situations. Rowan Atkinson is just perfect for the role and is surrounded by a very fitting cast. Overall "Johnny English" is very enjoyable and its more than fair share of iconic moments makes up for the occasional misstep.

Top badass moment? I’ve no idea how they got The Queen to be in it… Plot: That eye-candy bird from “Neighbours” and a talking Mr. Bean save the UK from being turned into a giant prison. Personally I never ‘got’ Mr. Bean, whilst I'm afraid I've never forgiven Nat for going back to Brad and starting a singing career. Black Adder would have made a much better secret agent, too. But any film that takes the piss out of the French is always worth a watch. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Amusing (and occasionally even hilarious) Bond-spoof is more Leslie Nielsen than Mike Myers; an inessential entry to the canon but still a lot of fun, especially seeing Atkinson and Miller doing something like a reverse Blackadder/Baldrick, and a shockingly hirsute Malkovich hamming it up with an even more shocking French accent. Howitt seems to be much better at staging background gags than the foreground ones (the poison dart sequence is superb).

Spy film parody where Atkinson plays the lead. Not bad idea. Peter Howitt's film Antitrust was so bad that one can't really hope something special from him. Luckily Atknison saves Howitt's kingdom armed with toiletbrush and gives overall great performance.

Basic, funny spy spoof-like film starring Mr.Bean doing a lot of his gags. Malkovich is good as usual, even with his 'french' accent (why?). Moves along at good pace and as similar as could be as a Bond film while having silly humour.

I have to say I pulled the plug on this after about 30 minutes because it was utterly banal, completely devoid of humour and frankly, embarrassing. Whether it got any better or not, I will never know, but I am glad I didn't waste an hour of my life finding out. How John Malkovich could read this script (I use the word loosely) and say "yea, count me in", God only knows.

If you like Mr. Bean and British spy movies, you'll find this a thoroughly enjoyable movie. It's typical Bean, with its absurd humor and situations. And he actually talks in the movie! I like all the moments of poking fun at the Bond style of movies. Even the soundtrack to Johnny English was Bond-like. Great fun!

For comedy fans that were well aware of what an iconic actor Atkinson is within the comedy world, this was already a dismal offering. It says a lot of the studio system that there's no roles for one of the best character comedy actors of all time. Or maybe he just doesn't care enough, after all, he did BEAN, and sequels to that and this.
