John Henry

Not well written enough to be a drama, too serious to be a comic book film (despite Ludacris' comical infinity jaw-ntlet), and disappointingly absent any action, it's nonetheless too short to be really boring, either. It'd just be forgettable, but how could I forget how they wasted the potential of brooding Terry Crews with a giant-ass hammer? Because damn.

Do you like people sitting around tables talking? Because this movie has a lot of that.

This is not a well-made movie. It's story is weak, it's pacing is bad, and it's editing is atrocious. The script might have been saved if they decided what John's arc was really about. Can he overcome his past? Is the conflict supposed to be his relation to Hell? The writers didn't seem to be able to choose. The acting and the cinematography are the only aspects that are done decently, but nowhere near good enough to make this movie work.

Boring, slow, unenthusiastic are all the first words that come to mind when this viewing is over. It's everything we have seen before from the genre with an attempt to add more flare and more dialogue. It doesn't work. It doesn't reinvent the genre and it doesn't even really contribute to the genre in anyway. Very poorly executed and misguided from the jump it never really quite finds a lane and therefore has nothing to stick with through out the treacherous plot as it implodes in front of us.
