It really shouldn't work, and quite a few people dislike it or consider it an admirable failure. Personally though I thought it worked very (and surprisingly) well. I love the strange world that is conjured up, the way the film is lit, the delightfully off-kilter edge to it all. It flows nicely and its usage of the Madonna/Whore complex (with two different groups of people adhering to the opposite ends of those beliefs) to propel the plot brings to mind Breaking the Waves.

Gripping. Though I'm not much of an opera fan, the music and the singing took me away. And the images! Sick people bathing in greenish light never looked so good. Imagine a Dennis Potter TV series with classical music and a script with religious overtones.
