Jeremiah Johnson is an old classic romanticized vision of the mountain hermit lifestyle, an epic of wilderness survival and a tragedy of the inevitable loneliness that comes as consequence of it all.

The vast majority of the film has aged very well. Redford is superb as the unwilling hermit hero seemingly destined to lead a life of conflict. The fight scenes are intense without feeling over the top or goofy but instead have a real life or death struggle to them. However I must say the soundtrack has become dated. Hearing someone sing a ballad about the main character is almost comedic, I'm sorry to say. Thankfully the vast majority of the film is superb.

A man builds a idyllic large luxury wooden lodge, virtually overnight, in the forest with nothing more than an axe, a dainty lady and a small child at his disposal! He must have worked them like slaves!? It gets bonus marks for Redford's awesome beard, but this film spends too much time doing nothing to be actually any good.

Glad I watched this one again. Just a great Western drama starring Robert Redford.

Something of a mood piece, a laconic rhythm pivoting only on the essentials. Form is function, resembling the sort of pure existence the title character seeks. But he learns that no man is an island. He takes on the burden of others, and is burden himself. His actions ripple. At the very least, and the very most, it is him and the landscape. Even the most rugged of mountain men are at the mercy of the natural order, and even the most towering myths are, after all, mortal.

Were is not for Redford's mighty charisma and the expert cinematography this would have fallen flat on its face. As it is, it is a fantastic, slow western about life in the wilderness.

Very raw. Robert Redford was amazing. The music - although I enjoyed it immensely - felt somewhat out of tone. So did the comedic element, notably the grizzly chase scene. Overall a very beautiful cinematic experience with memorable scenes, characters and moments. The finale was superb.

The real Jeremiah Johnson was a lunatic who ate the livers of the Indians he killed. I don't think that aspect of him (not necessarily liver-eating, but crazy) ever comes through here. I don't know if it is because of the script or because Redford doesn't have what it takes to play such a crazy dude, but I think that's really what's missing from the movie. It's pretty good, though.

To my surprise, this film lulled me into its world. Usually I feel emotionally distanced from Westerns. To me it always feels like male wish fulfillment, or like grown men playing dress-up. Technically, this is what Jeremiah Johnson is, but it never feels like it. Why? Robert Redford's completely believable and immersing performance, for one. Secondarily, the melancholy turn the film takes, which few Westerns do. Thirdly, the film's unrelenting silence. Must-See for Redford fans.

I don't usually hear about this movie when talking about hidden gems, but I think it's one of Redford's best roles. I like the way it is shot, and it's just a nice story about the wilderness.

Kind of lovable in a way. Especially if you yearn for the mountains, if you admire the Rocky's. The old west. The last part of the movie is it's strongest.

Very beautifully pictured story of mountains; a simple man and happening around him. Would have appreciated less vilification of natives.

Its a thoughtful watch and I enjoyed the cinematography, the mountainous landscapes, the fact that characters interact with the natives and there's at least some level of respect for their culture. The acting is good and the plot, while maybe a little slow, is pretty decent and I liked the sound of cold, chilly air blowing, which can be heard in the background at time, so in that sense its fairly engrossing and certainly overall I'd recommend it.

Seeing Redford cry was one of the hardest scenes I've ever watched, especially as we all knew it was either because he missed his beard or Paul Newman

There's a jarring gap between the white-conquerer theme and chipper, laid-back mood of the first reel, and the oddly hurried revenge fare of the second. It's a pity because the latter is much more exciting, but I read they were freezing solid by the end of filming, which must have had them in a rush. It's based on the legend of "Liver-Eating Johnson" which deserves to become a gruesome horror-thriller, full of scalping and such. In the early 1970s they still didn't have the stomach for that.

Much of Pollack's film is gorgeous. Its sprawling and harsh landscapes capture the untamed West with a sort of warning with its typical adventure. Throwing in some split diopter and odd zooms, sometimes Pollack makes the good times look a Brawny paper towel commercial. Redford is right for the calm parts, but I'm not sure that I buy him for crazed aspect of the real and murderous Johnson.

Feels like a weird, episodic fairy tale based on a folk song. Looks great, but is otherwise not that interesting. It's very slow (like you'd expect from Pollack), most of the acting is either cheesy or stare-based, and Redford's teen mag cover hair is the biggest fourth wall breaker I've ever seen.

Probably my favorite Robert Redford film. Excellent frontier movie about a guy that just wants to get away from the world and live off the land, yet nature manages to bring others to cross his path and alter his lifestyle and outlook. This movie has comedic undertones as well that make it fun to watch.

Redford wandering the Rocky Mountains as a man betrayed by his fate finally gives the film a tone and a purpose. Before that it's a prosaic, artless, uncertain settler western.

The opening scene is pretty bad, but Johnson gets into the wilderness pretty quick and once he does the film takes off. Great cinematography and a narrative that takes its time with a contemplative mood but never feels slow. By the end of the film a lot has happened and Johnson's trials make for good discussion fodder.

Jeremiah Johnson is an unconventional movie, it's set in a somewhat familiar western setting, but it's more of a journey film than a western, and the script is more European than American. Unorthodox, for a movie that revolves around an American folk legend. Redford is good, but there's very little interplay with the rest of the cast, making it a hard movie to watch.

Starts very well but lacks in the second half of the film. It would have been great if Pollack had focused the story on the survival part like Jeremiahs beginning of the journey. Nevertheless a descent western with an awesome young Redford.

Jeremiah Johnson: mountain man, trapper, Indian fighter, nature lover. That's all the film is about --a romaniticized portrait of the rugged individualist (you can tell it was John Milius screenplay even if his name weren't on the credit). There's plenty of scenery porn, and Robert Redford gazing wistfully/moodily/savagely into space.
