Thandie Newton was beautiful, engaging and believable. She stole nearly every scene she was in. Nick Nolte, an odd choice for Jefferson, was mostly uninspired. I enjoyed the story but wonder how many liberties were taken in the telling of it. Lavish costumes and sets faithfully reproduce the feel and decadence of the period. Also memorable performances from Greta Scacchi, Gwyneth Paltrow, James Earl Jones and Simon Calloway. A movie well worth watching, but lacking in action and excitement.

Beautiful usual Merchant-Ivory details. No deep internal conflicts about the institution of slavery, love triangle, or the French Revolution. I cannot forgive the film for choosing to give Thandie Newton (playing a 14-15 year old) agency in seducing her helpless old master, especially with the bookends of her son telling the story? Fav scene: probably one of the good Gwyneth Paltrow speeches standing up to him, but she never really had any say.

Everything is alright, but Nick Nolte as 3rd President...uh?
