Chabrol procures the script to Clouzot's unfinished film from his widow, and resulting is an interesting cross between France's two masters of suspense. It's unclear whether Clouzot's peculiar sensitivities entirely survive the transition to Chabrol's care, and whether Chabrol feels perfectly at home with this material, but it cannot be denied that Jealousy is a very good thriller, with formidable acting by François Cluzet and Emmanuelle Béart.

Physical and animated lead actor carries it especially in 2nd half. A good illustration of how having leverage (imagined or otherwise) against someone can make you want to smug it up and be a bit of a bully. I loved a Hitchcockian shot, maybe even unintentionally so, where the camera palpably pushes through a cloud of cigarette smoke.

Seriously? It takes him raping her for someone to realize he needs medical help? Are you kidding me? I really don't understand her indulging in his behaviour after it's been made clear to her that it's pathological. Least of all setting herself up to be raped a second time. It's implausable but she's traumatized, I can buy that. BUT WHAT KIND OF FUCKING INCOMPETENT ASSHOLE DOCTOR LETS A RAPE VICTIM GO HOME WITH THE MENTALLY ILL DUDE WHO JUST FUCKING RAPED HER?!? Cluzet's acting was a bit much.

Emmanuelle Beart. oh my. Otherwise very affecting portrayal of insane jealousy - and difficult to watch because of its accuracy.

Starts out well enough, but soon veers off into silliness. Béart is enthralling, Cluzet does his best with the poorly written role he's given.

At a certain point towards the end, this one really loses it. I so enjoyed the early bits, too.

Well made, but nothing very original here.

Many years since I saw this. My recollection is that, even though jealousy may be an emotion that can lead to absurd behaviour, this film is itself ludicrously and increasingly silly.
