Acclaimed director Tony Gatlif spins this wildly anarchic tale about three young punks, a bevy of cinematic inside jokes, and a talking stork. Otto and Louna (Romain Duris and Rona Hartner), along with their brainy pal Ali (Ouassini Embarek), rescue a wounded stork who turns out to be an illegal immigrant and a deserter from the Algerian army.

Je Suis Né D'une Cigogne has an interesting concept and a great use of a visual metaphor in film. Unfortunately the frantic editing, socially deplorable characters and fourth-wall breaks, while all purposeful, were not to my tastes in the slightest. Ultimately, Gatlif's commentary on racism and exclusion get lost under a mountain of pretentious trickery and less than sympathetic characters.
