In this film, Jason: gathers the best men possible to do all the heavy lifting for him, kills a creature that only tried to recover its stolen treasure, humiliates creatures that were just doing the job their god gave to them, and rolls into town to steal a priceless item whose removal will cause major issues for the civilization owning it just so he can show off what a pimp he is at home with the endgoal of gaining undeserved power to rule the country. Jason is kind of an asshole.

Strong special effects and a fun story make up for many of the film's flaws. The acting ranges from cheesy to just plain bad and the story is incomplete, but the consistency of those aspects makes it possible to look beyond them and have a good time.

Harryhausen's work holds up well. Miniatures in water is a disaster, but the stop-motion stuff is all good. The skeletons are creepy as heck, and the fluid movement of the hydra's heads is obviously a labor of love. The plot of the story is fine as well, although the acting isn't that great. Greek gods are so much more fun and interesting than the Christian god. They bicker among themselves, rampantly fuck around with people's lives, and aren't shy about revealing themselves.

It's difficult to assess this outside of the warm nostalgia I feel for it having watched it a billion times as a youngster. There is loads to like here, the stop-motion effects (those skeletons!), the bombastic Herrmann score, the mad encounters caused by the mischievous gods. Bonus points for Honor Blackman. It's all quite wholesome, really, and most likeable.

The special effects in this film are akin to the very earliest dawn of 3D video game graphics in the mid 90s - I totally see why they were amazing and groundbreaking at the time, which in no way changes how cheesy and hilarious they are today. The film also kind of lacks an ending, like, the main villain established in the first act is never encountered again. It has kind of a fun Saturday matinee adventure vibe to it in its stronger stretches though.

It's a bit of a classic thanks to Harryhausen's effects; yes, the battles against the stop-motion giant and the skeleton soldiers that you always see in clips are the best bits, and yes it's worth watching to see them again. The rest of the film can't maintain the same level but is still good clean entertainment with distinct characters and many memorable bits. The pacing is haphazard and there's not much of an ending, but you have to forgive this and make the most of the swords and sandals fun.

If my life was to be filmed in stop-motion photography, I'd travel to the Bayou to learn necromancy so I could resurrect Ray Harryhausen. And then I'd have him add a scene where I fight skeletons.

Ray Harryhousen's fantasy films are never super strong on story and always feature a lot of serviceable acting, but nobody cares because they are watching them to see his amazing effects work. This one is one of his best in that regard featuring the bronze giant Talos, a couple of Harpies and an army of skeletons. The way Harryhousen successfully integrates stop motion creatures into live action footage while making their interaction seem totally convincing is nothing short of astonishing.

One of the great classic family fantasy adventures primarily due to the pioneering stop motion model work from the legend that is Ray Harryhausen. I used to love this as a child, and even though the acting and clunky script are less palatable as an adult 30 years later, the creature work, especially Talos and the Skeleton Army, are still wonderful moments in cinema history.

A fairly amusing romp. Although the Harryhausen stopmotion still looks kinda nice, and gets away with any flaws it has due to how much charm it has, the rest of the effects can look a bit bad at times and in particular the film can look really dodgy from one shot to another such as the sky shifting from a bold blue to really washed out and lifeless and back from shot to shot. Also the acting is a bit rough as well, but the film kept me fairly well entertained throughout.

The movie is really campy. The problem is, it doesn't know it's campy. It takes itself mostly seriously. Of course, this does make it unintentionally amusing. The acting is pretty bad too. The reason why this movie is famous though, is its special effects. And they really were remarkable for the time. I found it watchable because I like Greek mythology and all that, but it's not really a good film, apart from the visual effects.

This is probably my favorite Harryhausen that I've seen to date. This is some of the best stop motion I've ever seen, give me this stuff any day of the abundance of CGI used today. The story is great, as a mythology nerd, this gives me multiple nerdgasms, and each set-piece is as fantastic as the last (although it peeked too soon with Talos). My only criticism is the acting doesn't really hold up today and can be a bit distracting at times. If you have any interest in stop motion, watch this.

Hercules is a scene-stealing mega Chad and should have played the lead. The stop motion FX are superb, but sadly the script is trash and the pacing is horrendous. Overall, it's passable in a campy sort of way, but I'd take Clash of the Titans or Conan over this any day.

The special effects are quite basic but I understand that when it came out, it must have brought surprise and wonder to audiences. It maybe a little slow in terms of plot pace now & again but the scenes featuring supposed creatures that come to life are (no matter the quality of visual effects at play) still worth hanging around to see - particularly the famous scene towards the end. I'd recommend this to fans of this type of film - its part adventure, part animation and part mythical fantasy.

It should say something right away when the fight choreography is better between the humans and the stop motion creatures than between the humans themselves! We all watch it specifically for Harryhausen's effects, and they do not disappoint. The rest of the movie is decent on its own, and hilarious once the main villain steps onto the screen!

Story is all over the shop but the creative effects and overall adventuring-vibe make this charming and fun watch. There's surprisingly little effort to soft-pedal the brutal logic of Greek mythos. Harryhausen is the real star of the movie and his work is universally captivating.

a somewhat interesting fantasy romp, that dwindles at times. it does some great special effects, and is taken from a story that is hard to make a bad movie out of. the failings of this movie aren't made up by any of it's successes--so it just ends up being a good one watch, but honestly you'd be better off watching the 2000 version.

It might be getting on in years and has certainly lost most of its then impressive special effects to the modern CGI affair, but it still provides a great afternoon flick. Although dated small aspects such as the particuarly memorable jerky and mildly disturbing skeletons fill it full of character, making it hard not to enjoy. Maybe it isn't actually that great, but it sure knows how to come on the charm offensive. In my eyes, it's a classic.

While the Medusa scene from Clash of the Titans is likely his greatest scene, I think Jason and the Argonauts is truly Harryhausen's masterpiece. Every instance of his work is astounding and wonderful; Talos is monstrously imposing and the skeletons are so well-integrated into their scene that nothing tops it. The narrative is simplistic but engaging, offering just what an adventure story of this caliber requires. Finally, this is easily one of Bernard Herrmann's best scores. I love this shit.

It is definitely Harryhausen’s effects that are the star here and, especially where the skeletons are concerned, what is amazing is how tangible and real the effects seem; inevitably dated but they certainly live up to their reputation as an important landmark. As for the rest of the film, you do need to give over to it, but it’s a good fun, old-fashioned bronzed gladiator movie, that can be taken tongue-in-cheek seriously or as outrageous camp; some sluggish pacing doesn't spoil the fun.

Top badass moment? Some men in dresses redefining the word "futile" by throwing pebbles at a giant, pissed-off bronze dude. After Jason assembles a crew based on their ability to win a punch up, a boat-full of over-tanned testosterone, mostly through luck, ends up where it wanted to go. Then they condemn an indigenous population to a slow death, by stealing their Golden Fleece and defeating some skeletons, who start by doing the dance from "Thriller" at them. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Aside from the special effects and set pieces, I don't feel this has much going for it. The story itself is not that interesting, the characters are paper-thin and poorly acted, and even the action sequences are pretty clunky and a bit lacking. The film doesn't really have an ending either. It's a shame because everyone kept hyping me this movie was awesome because of the Skeletons, and they're great, but there's a lot of boring moments to get to it. I felt super disappointed and expected more.

If you think I was going to give it less than a 90, you'd be "mythtaken." A rapid pace is topped with memorable action, funny dialog, monumental effects by Ray Harryhausen, and an intellectual commentary on faith and fate. Bernard Herrman's score creates an exciting atmosphere for every kid at heart. Objectively, the non-animated portions may be a bit "B-movieish" but the film as a whole is so satisfying that I'll put it among the greats.

Unintentionally amusing, but a pretty fun movie although it can be tough with its pacing at least in my opinion. I found it got tiresome pretty fast although I did really enjoy the first half of the movie. The claymation fights are hilarious and it is pretty cheesy at times which is great. It strives to be serious, but isn't so serious but luckily that doesn't make this bad.

The only reason anyone cares about this movie is the special effects. That's only about 50% of the movie. You have to put up with very slow meandering scenes in between those great moments, and it's not worth it. It's better to go on Youtube and check out a compilation of all of Ray Harryhausen's work than watch any of the entire movies those scenes are in.
