It's an average movie, and maybe a bit above-average within the genre. Performances are fine, story is fine, cinematography is fine, score is fine, basically everything about this movie is fine. It also manages to avoid some kind of fatal flaw that would torpedo the ranking. It just doesn't reach in any significant way for anything more than "fine". Maybe the ending is a little convenient or clichéd but I feel weird criticising over that anymore. It's a good time for most in the audience!

It's a solid western with a great story and interesting characters. The storytelling however, is overused and a bit frustrating to endure, but the preparation and final showdown makes up for the annoying flashbacks and stupid title. *Okay

Underrated by the critics. Sure, it veers way too happy with the ending, but other than that, it's a well made Western with compelling well-acted characters and a decent showdown.

So here we have another pro-gun-control actor(ess) in a gun toting role which can only make her look like a giant hypocrite and/or just stupid a la Jodie Foster after The Brave One. And guns is only one of the many issues where Hollywood hypocrisy lives on. The movie is average in most respects but worth seeing.

A stock western with strong characters, performances, and an admirable sense of history between its characters. The flashbacks often detract more than they add and the story is a bit too familiar to really excite, but I cared about the people here. The score at times reminded me of something direct to video. When it's good it can be very good, but it feels like it doesn't quite trust itself. It's a bit underrated, though. Perfectly solid film.

The sad thing about this movie is that they could have done so much more with the concept. You have Natalie Portman as a headstrong woman who learns to defend herself and those she loves, but the events here are very, very slow-burn. While I often enjoy the slow progress of things in movies, there's just not much happening here. Didn't particularly like the scenes from the past in the middle of the main plot, either. It just felt messy.

Would make an okay modern western double bill with, the albeit superior, Slow West. Ewan McGregor is the best thing in it.

Calamity Jane'in hikayesi. Dan Frost, kötü adam John Bishop'tan, Jane'in hayatını ve kızını korumaya karar verir. Jane'in evinde tuzak hazırlığı yapılır.

Bu klişe filmi izlemek yerine, Elvis'in aynı adı taşıyan şarkısını dinlemenizi tavsiye ederim. 2/10

It just wasted time on a drama revealed with flashbacks. Love triangle as a main plot element in a western? Please, just give me good ol' shoot 'em up!

The script has several boring moments, it took a long time for me to get interested. There are a number of characters that are not interesting in this film. Natalie Portman is good in the lead role but overall this film is disappointing.

Jane Got a Gun is not a bad movie. The performances from Edgerton and Portman especially are decent, and the script doesn't have any horrendous dialogue. There are even some great directorial moments from Gavin O'Connor, and there's definitely no terrible ones. The biggest problem is the plot. It relies too heavily on flashbacks and adds unnecessary backstory towards the end of the film, as well as turning the ending way too bright too fast. It's not good, but it sure ain't bad either.

In some ways it's not surprising that this film disappeared. It's a very simple, modestly budgeted story (enhanced a great deal by its non-linear narrative) w/ none of "important" empowering messages that gets the liberal media excited (it's a western starring a woman but she needs help from a man). McGregor's also too low-key to really be a dastardly villain. Still, the way character is revealed through flashback is compelling, Portman gives a great performance & the cinematography's beautiful.

Perfectly fine modern Western. The title is stupid, and the trailer did it no favors but I enjoyed myself. The story is fine but the overuse of flashbacks was jarring yet provided the only real emotional connection to any characters. They were a real double edged sword. Performances are good to great which makes it much more enjoyable. Probably forgettable, but not bad by any means.

93 minutes of looking for Ewan McGregor in the midst of all the shooting. It turns out he has black hair in this one.

That such a hard-edged movie about loss and retribution ends happily only makes the juxtaposition of those thematic extremes feel all the more jarring. Well, maybe not only. I'm glad this story ends in a place of hope and redemption. But a whole lot of bullets find their final resting places in bad guys' skulls before that riding-off-into-sunset scene finally comes to the rescue. (pluggedin.com)

Natalie Portman did not make for a good leading lady in a western. Then again this wasn't a very interesting western to begin with, lacking a clear vision with every performance feeling oddly forced. Not the hearty project Portman was hoping to produce.

Portman & Edgerton offer the only impactful presence to this otherwise typical, stodgy Western where most of the action is discussed instead of manifested.
