You can clearly see this is taken from a quality novel and director John Cromwell is extensively ambitious with the way he brings us into these family affairs, using moving shots majority of the time. But there is a strange awkwardness about the ambiance, especially with the inserted close-ups. Everything becomes too staged as well as there being something very off about the acting in general.
