Jakob the Liar

Tries hard to ride on the 'smiles through tears'-wave originated by Life Is Beautiful - and fails miserably. Williams is even less believable than in Flubber!

Difficult to rate. An attempt at celebrating Jewish humour -and it's part in survival/coping- but with very little MASH-style black it's an awkward mix of lines, clowning and farce. Without Williams' odd charm I could easily have hated this.

One of the most self-conscious Holocaust movies ever made.

Part of that movement in the years that followed Schindler's List, where people would slap together melodrama, family comedy, and Fiddler on the Roof and set it during the Holocaust. The best thing about this is Robin Williams getting the Moses beaten out of him.

Best movie I've seen about the Nazi holocaust. *ducks*

i know i'm in the minority, but i cant help but love any holocaust movie, that and it has robin williams.

This could have been twice as long or half as long it wouldn't have mattered. So it captures the limbo timelessness of the ghetto, so what. The movie plays like a serious episode of Hogan's Heroes with the actors looking like so many useless rag dolls one can only desire to have inflicted with violence. The movie is supposed to be sad, and instead its just stupid. Why do people make movies like this?

So much like Life is Beautiful, except that Life is Beautiful was actually good.

Insulting melodrama.

Good film.
