Spectacular film. Very Tarkovkskian sequences troughout the whole movie made it even more special.

These kinds of movies should leave some questions unanswered or at least try to be somewhat subtle, not explain everything in your face like it's made for twelve-year-olds.

while the movie does have potential, it is far too long for its own good as well as having a too weak of a twist. fininshing scene was beautiful, nevertheless. the weak link in the otherwise fantastic chain of films by zyvagintsev.

26 Haziran 08 & film fazla uzun fakat son yarim saatini izlemek tum sikintiyi unutturuyor.yagmur sahnesi, kilise sahnesi ve kadinin gecmisine geri donme sahnesi cok basariliydi.bazi sahneler milimalizmin in doruk noktasi olsa gerek. konuyu basariyla isledigi soylenebilinir.

While it generally looks good (although the filmmakers have undeniably been infected with the orange-and-teal fetish), everything hangs on the revelatory speech by Vera, and unfortunately it just doesn't cut it.

Top badass moment? Walnut Trees. Walnut trees are cool. So yes, it’s long, slow and Thomas Hardyesque in its depressing depiction of unfulfilled folk. A miserable couple not communicating make lots of phone calls, whilst the director sees the value of his recently purchased shares in a Russian tranquiliser manufacturer go through the roof. My advice to Alex would be раз на раз не приходится. 1 cat (a cute kitten helping with a jigsaw puzzle), no chainsaws or decapitations.

Zvyagintsev doing his typical best to depress his audience as much as humanly possible.

It is a good film but only if you see MANY scenes in fast forward (which I did).

The twist is in the story is a bit disorienting much like a real life story like this. The back and forth nature of the way it is told however takes away some of the tension and interest for me in the last hour. Which is a shame because I was really into it up to that point. Not bringing the kids to the frame again in the latter parts seem like a bit of a copout.

(TIFF 07') An insufferable experience that recalls Tarkovsky in the best and worst possible way. Visually captivating images notwithstanding, this truly one of the most boring movies I've seen. The often silent intervals are comatose inducing, and when the characters do open their mouths, you wish they hadn't. Utter snoozefest.

More tribute is paid to Tarkovsky by Andrei Zvyagintsev with his second film. The cinematography is absolutely breathtaking and the shots are composed with the care of a master craftsman. Slow meditation on the role of the post-Soviet male and a great look into a dysfunctional family.
