It's Always Fair Weather

Oh how horrible the real world is, if only we could have the good old days when we were at were killing people and watching our friends die. A horribly misguided concept is punctuated with a stream of terrible songs both lyricwise and soundwise and actingwise. Some of the dancing is pretty good, and some of the moments in the hamfisted story are ok, but mostly a waste of time.

I give it a 74 just because of Gene Kelly. His dance on roller skates rivals his street scene dance, jumping up and down in puddles, from "Singing in the Rain."

In some ways one of the oddest musicals i've seen, but also one of the best and certainly one of the most cinematically sophisticated (the difference between this and On the Town in just a few years is astounding). It feels a bit thematically similar to Frank Tashlin's films from the same time, but also maybe like a Hollywood musical predecessor to Cassavetes' Husbands? It basically feels like a musical happening in the imagination of a man going through a midlife crisis (but in a good way?)

So I didn't expect to like it this much. Not once did it border on melodrama or something that was disrespectful, but it felt like it was genuinely a tale of friendship being victim to the years. The dancing is great as usual, but it is supported with an actual well-written story.

A sort of spiritual sequel to ON THE TOWN, where three veterans (Gene Kelly, Dan Dailey, and Michael Kidd) reunite 10 years later and find themselves unhappy with each other...and themselves. While not perfect (Kelly''s ego shifted most of the focus to him; Kidd is especially short-changed), it's fascinating: the musical numbers are brilliantly staged, making excellent early use of CinemaScope, and the script is pretty sharp, though this being an MGM musical, a happy ending is hardly in doubt.

This is one of the best of Hollywood musicals, an ironic spiritual sequel to "On the Town." If you watch it without preconceptions, letting the dark parts of the story work on you, I suspect you will be pleasantly surprised.

There's nothing particularly special about this musical (although the roller skating sequence was very good), yet I sat through the entire thing with a silly smile on my face. (I was really wondering how much was included based on wildly improbable bets -- "bet you can't include a group of boxers singing like a barbershop quartet"; "oh, yeah, bet *you* can't get a gal in high heels to spin flamenco moves on the boxing canvas....")
