Seems to be trying to draw some connection between desire and Buddhism, but unlike the other three films in Jissoji's Buddhism collection, which are bold and unconventional discussions about Buddhism, desire and Japan, the connection here seems to be just a faint shadow that doesn't show any clear orientation. Probably this weakness shows both Jissoji's limited understanding about female sexuality and Buddhism's inability to truly encounter female sexuality, since the main character is a woman.

Wasn't really able to get much out of this tale, which seemed like conventional melodrama dressed up with some Japanese-type preoccupations but not a lot of depth.
