An otherwise charming, well-written screwball is let down by a lacklustre resolution, with Cummings’ cowardly son never becoming worthy of the radiant Durbin. The magnificent Charles Laughton performance almost completely makes up for it though, with every moment of his elderly, Cupid-playing millionaire just an absolute joy to behold. Rudolph Maté shoots the mansion interiors beautifully.

This was so great! Every character actor was tweaked a little but different than their usual persons and the oddball timing was excellent. Only a slightly lackluster conclusion prevents It Started with Eve (1941) from becoming an all-time favorite. Charles Laughton was made for such roles and the sweet chemistry with Deanna Durbin was perfect. If only they'd put as much effort in the ending quarter as they had with everything else in the movie....!
