By 1937, everyone was tired of films about silent stars who couldn't make the transition to talkies (and would be until Singin' in the Rain), but this Columbia comedy-drama still had its moments in spite of gross inaccuracies. Richard Dix is Western star Tim Bart, a screen hero who is adored by children everywhere. All that changes when sound comes in -- outdoor pictures are risky because of sound problems and Bart's screen test proves that he can't possibly play indoorsy society men. (allrovi.com)

This movie has some stiff competition from SIGNIN IN THE RAIN and SUNSET BLVD. And it doesn't even come close to either one. But it is slightly interesting in that it was made so soon after the transition. However, Dix's character is such a swell egg that the film feels rather lightweight and bland. The earnest boy who worships him doesn't make it any easier to swallow. Still, it goes down easy enough to be watchable, and includes one genuinely terrific scene of a party featuring star doubles.

Showed so much promise early on taking on the transition to sound and giving it a comic presentation. Then it turns too sentimental. Sure, this was never the type of film that was going to deliver big laughs. It Happened in Hollywood (1937) is more of a warm story about a struggling screen cowboy unable to find work once the talkies take over, with Richard Dix as western star Tim Bart and Fay Wray as his leading lady, both on screen and personal. The look-a-likes scene was great!

Fav scene: the real life doubles filling in for their roles at the party.
