Nice twist. Jon Stewart's touch isn't evident until a final part with him basically speaking through Mackenzie Davis. I was really disappointed at the "but both sides" message since he's unlikely to reach many right-leaning audiences anyway. Steve Carell and Rose Byrne needed more scenes together. Movie was bland until she appeared. Charming sugar-coated Hollywood small town that I would love to live in. Fav scene: Byrne claiming she's from "Deerlaiken" and Carell chasing her upset she lied.

Maybe I'm just biased because I like Steve Carell. Maybe I'm biased because I love politics and used to want to study political science, and this is a very, very subtle satire that tries to expose the harsh realities of how terrible the left and right side is, and how most of them claim to believe in issues, but realistically just care about money. Biased: 76% | Unbiased: 84% | Predicted: 68%

I'm dismayed to discover that Jon Stewart wrote and directed this but now I get it. Irresistible plays like a Hallmark / Comedy Central collaboration. It's as bad as that sounds. We spend all our time hopping from one broad, lazy, tired caricature of rural life to another. That works on a comedy show. It doesn't work in what's supposed to be a heartfelt movie. I only rate it this highly because it's watchable--but why would you? The movie won't give you a reason.

Given who made it, it was expected that it would be a little more left-leaning. But given who made it, I also expected a lot more in terms of laughs. I like Stewart, but despite the absolutely undeniable talent involved--specifically the charm of the leads--it is painfully bland. Not bad, but it just doesn't do much. You can't speak of partisanship being bad then completely engage in it and expect the message to not be hollow. However, the biggest offense is that it's just not funny.

It’s not particularly good or that bad. Just a bit drab and dorky in the worst way. Wish it was funnier at least.

Starts slow & student filmy, felt like maybe a dud; humor began dryly, but within 17 min, we were off to the races. Every aspect picked up quality & momentum through to the unexpectedly perfect & refreshingly down to earth finale. The people who criticized it as trite & caricature-driven evidently didn’t finish it. May be biased having worked in rural politics, but this really resonated & was incredibly real. The weird beginning turns out to be self aware. Nun-enraging Nat Lyon ftw 😻

A little too blunt, and really I expected more from Stewart. Its points are valid enough but the story and much everything else about the film is too lightweight to carry home its messages with any consequence. It’s not without merit, but never exceptional.

Cool twist that says something worth saying, but in the end the whole film just becomes about that one thing it has to say and nothing else really works.

This felt quite cheap, like it was a TV-special instead of a proper theatrical feature. The cast is fine: Carell suits these kinds of roles, as does Byrne as his nemesis and Cooper is also believable as the democratic candidate. Satire was quite superficial and the ending felt more of a copout than being clever. It’s not a bad film, but the premise was much more promising than the resulting film.

IRRESISTABLE is a film often guilty of the thing it's satirizing: the cynical desire to score political points. But Jon Stewart just doesn't give a fuck, and a significant part of me finds that admirable. A so-so movie, but a telling act of modern trollery.

I think it's interesting enough, and I like how it ended, which made it stand out more than it otherwise would have I think. There's some dialogue in here that makes me wonder if they improvised some stuff. I don't think it all works great, but it's worth watching once if you enjoy political stuff.

Hits you over the head with its message, but I still liked it a lot. I guess I'm the only one?

Some laughs in this political movie, but it is really pretty silly and not as profound as it wants to be.

*GOOD* - There's the inklings of interesting social commentary beneath the surface, even if it never really manifests. *BAD* - Bland humor, especially for Stewart. - A bit too undecisive in its message. - Ending feels a little too neatly tied together.

There are a few new flourishes on a familiar concept, but the comedy largely falls flat, the character caricatures are lifeless, and the whole thing falls short.

It's a little... i don't know... easygoing for my taste. The humor is surprisingly tame for a Jon Stewart political comedy, so when I went in expecting a biting commentary on the Trump era, I really only got a somewhat cynical political fart. Not what it could have been.

This movie hates you and thinks you are stupid. Offers the worst caricatures on both sides to make its point, the hicks are more clever than you think they are and the elites are ruthless pricks.

Fun political comedy-drama, but nothing too earth-shattering. Definitely comes from a left perspective but has a "the whole system sucks" feel.

You can't say this is bad and the Daily Show is good because they're both cut from the same cloth. Big "rally to restore sanity" vibes. Pretends to be above the TOXIC PARTISANSHIP but is basically a feel-good absolving of people in power because of coastal elite political consultants or whatever. I dunno it's unfunny and not that deep and I'm probably overthinking it but unfortunately I did grow up when Jon Stewart was like the only "left" voice on television.
