After the dull and crappy Iron Man 2 and the fun-if-a-bit-overrated The Avengers, I was pleasantly shocked by how thoroughly enjoyable I found this. It scores on the big screen action count, but also has lots of laugh lines and nice character work and (perhaps alone among films so far in the Avengers series) actually says something pretty interesting about the use of symbols and theatricality in warfare and terrorism.

Where the first movie was rather by-the-numbers and the second one had major issues regarding momentum and reasons to care, this third outing pleasantly surprised me with its much better balance between character stuff, story, comedy and action. What amused me was that knowing the comic pretty well actually makes one of the surprise reveals more surprising. Downey is much less manic and quirky, which was welcome. Kingsley owns, Pierce is decent, and the Cheadle bromance was delicious.

The third "Iron Man" movie is the best "Tony Stark" movie seen yet, and the latest chapter in the "Marvel Cinematic Universe". Directed and co-written by Shane Black the film is a quippy and engaging dive into the post-"Avengers" world of "Tony Stark". Instead of aliens and inter-dimensional wormholes, "Iron Man" takes a backseat to "Tony Stark" who is forced to face a more grounded threat of the international terrorist theatrics of a super-solider bio-weapons scientist out for revenge and power

What it lacks in scope compared with Avengers, it sure makes up for with Shane Black added into the mix. Unapologetically entertaining from start to finish, and playing refreshingly loose with the tropes of the genre, this instalment finally gave Downey Jr. the movie he deserved.

Yet another crisp buddy cop-masterclass from Shane Black - neatly disguised as a superhero sequel. He can't hide not caring the least for the Iron Man character or most of the genre characteristics, but Black nonetheless easily delivers the most charming installment of the series. Oh, and "I'm not that kind of a doctor".

In honor of Iron Man 3 having more one liners than a YouTube "50 greatest Schwarzenegger quotes" video, I've decided to do my review completely in one liners: 1) Impossible to love, unpossible to hate. 2) An emotionally vulnerable Tony Stark is an emotionally vapid Tony Stark. 3) You know when I said I'd watch you last, Iron Man 3? I lied.

Possesses the advantage of containing the suggestion not only that America has created its demons through its own past actions, not only that it continues to conjure its demons from out of its own anxieties, but, reading between the lines, that nations can suffer collective post-traumatic stress disorder and that this may then lead them to inflate their sufferings and their projections via the spectacles of the mass media.

A superhero movie is said to be as great as its villain. In 'Iron Man 3', this is not the case, unfortunately. The film is flabby and it aims for broader tastes than mine. A few amusing bits and one particularly fun surprise more or less make up for all the flat moments and the many fizzling jokes - but, being a fan of Shane Black's, I had hoped for something sharper.

Well why don't they just make *all* action movies like that? This was fun the entire way through - the kind of thing where you *never* have to turn your brain off to get a full-fledged action-adventure with good lines and good spectacle and also interesting characters and a good plot. It does geopolitics and media manipulation better than 90% of movies that try, it has the characters playing beautifully off each other, and Pepper kicks ass. More of this please.

I'm scared about how much I disliked this. I mean after not liking Avengers and hating Iron Man 2, I didn't think that level of distaste could be topped. When you throw in an annoying kid, terrible twists and transformers esque writing it becomes pretty clear its about tot happen though. Found no satisfaction in the action or any of the characters, I'd prefer to never give a moment thought to this franchise again.

The most fun you can really ask for this time of year, packing some skilfully directed set pieces that easily put past MCU directors to shame. But a movie of this size can't pull through on thrills and wit alone; Despite Black's best efforts of opposing Iron Man to a villain of equal measure, the overarching conflict proves somewhat inconsequential as the latter eventually becomes another threat for him to thwart off. Above average comic book fare.

It's a fun summer blockbuster movie, roughly as deep as a slightly deep puddle for the most part. There are larger themes here but I never felt these were the point. Solid work from the cast, very funny at points with good action, it's a solid watch. Also, I liked the subversion of the child sidekick thing. "We're connected" indeed.

Shane Black and RDJr already have a creative synthesis, and this is what happens when you throw a ton of money at fun people having a (responsible) good time. Its plot is pretty subversive for Marvel - some drugged out hookers and executions and an updated Military Industrial Complex kept me interested, but Kingsley kept me intrigued. He's a Monty Python sketch: Bin Laden as Gregory Peck doing a drunk Walter Kronkite one minute, and a deflecting Eric Idle Hey Uncle the next. It's a hoot.

Badly edited & incoherent. If you can figure out this plot, you're a genius. So many subplots, so much violence & carnage, so many explosions & special effects. Oh yeah, and lots of Iron Man suits, that assemble in mid-air. The first time you see the pieces of the armour fly onto Tony Stark, it's interesting. The 3rd time, it's just stupid. Batman And Robin was a better film than this dreck. But don't blame the actors, they did their best with this hot mess. Blame the director & the screenwriter

Downey remains a thoroughly watchable lead, and the supporting cast are all pretty good. Ben Kingsley is watchable in everything, and is on fine form here. Some of the plotting is a bit contrived, and in keeping with the rest of the series I always feel that the story is building towards something else, but the film generally works well. The action scenes are handled effectively, and there is a decent tonal balance struck between light and dark. Enjoyable, if unexceptional.

A bit better than the previous 2. They tried to give Stark some human emotions, and mostly failed, but he's still vaguely more like a person than before. But still it's just flashy images and gee-whizz SFX in place of any kind of plot. Completely forgettable popcorn filler that has nothing you'll remember the next day other than a couple of bottom-tier one-liners.

I've never understood the concept of "turning off your brain" while watching a movie; over analyzing and nitpicking films is kind of my thing. And yet, Iron Man 3 was so fun and so smart that it allowed me to do just that. The script is fantastic, perfectly balancing Stark's existential crisis, humor, and action scenes. Nothing ever felt too convoluted or too bleak, and the pacing remained spot on throughout. A thoroughly engaging and fun film in it's own right, and the perfect superhero movie.

While I did enjoy Downey Jr's hyper-bastard delivery and was possibly the least annoyed by Gwyneth Paltrow than I ever have been, I probably could've just been equally entertained by watching Guy Pearce and Ben Kingsley play checkers and discuss their weekend plans. Plus that would've cut about $190,000,000 off the special effect budget.

Great start to the next phase, putting the focus more on the main and his fragility than on the suits themselves. Though there are some damned fine suit moments too. Very much feels like a Shane Black movie too which is no bad thing. Marvel continue to turn out fantastic movies, not just fantastic comic book movies. Very clever, very well performed, hint of cheese in the borderline Nuclear Man badies.

Shane Black directed this? Oh wow, no wonder Tony and Rhodey felt like Riggs and Murtaugh. Marvel may have finally figured out the right formula for fun; it's not deep or emotionally powerful, but detached entertainment and one-liners are good every once in a while. And who better than Tony Stark, back on top of his game, to deliver that?

Similar to my experience watching The Dark Knight Rises, I spent the majority of the second half of the movie nit-picking everything because I wasn't enjoying myself enough. It's more forgivable than Batman was because the Iron Man series takes itself less seriously but it really didn't need to be 2 hours and 20 minutes.

It retains the witty one-liners and Downey's undeniable jocular charisma. But it also suffers from several missteps: a typical and overly familiar revenge-driven villain, an awkward and forced PTSD subplot used as an unsuccessful attempt to add some kind of depth to the Stark character, and several coarse/cheap jokes that seem to slightly undermine Ironman's cool factor. It's still fun and polished enough to work as an entertaining but minor addition to the Marvel cannon.

It's ok - Downey is still charismatic but not at his best. I do like the idea of Tony having to rebuild himself and the buddy cop feel of Iron Man and War Machine: that seems like exactly how it should be from the comics. But the villain is not only a let down if you know Mandarin from the comics, but what they actually do is utterly forgettable. Without that and Pepper getting superpowers, this could've been great.

It's a tough transition to go back into a world where only one hero is in focus when we know the rest of the Avengers are just hanging out somewhere off screen. But they did a nice job and Shane Black reinvigorates this sub-franchise after the second installment felt like a rehash of the first.

Top notch action and effects. The story is solid, though perhaps the ending leaves something to be desired. Thankfully, with this being a part of the MCU, it's not so much an ending as a transition and the best parts of the series were yet to come.

A bit on the uneven side. It's funny, watching the suits fly around and attach themselves never gets old, Pepper is tolerable and Rhodes is still awesome. But they really wanted to get back to the basics with Tony making a suit in a garage, so they hoped we would overlook the fact that the way he gets there is pretty much by jumping on the plotbus. And the final boss fight is just stuff blowing up, even if Pepper punching clean through a suit was pretty cool.

Appallingly dreary and inept - a companion piece to the Fantastic Four sequel. It's further evidence that Hollywood are incapable of conceiving of a good super hero movie that isn't an origins story. There's no genre to it to give it some structure, watching it on DVD it seemed like a made-for-TV movie with some surprising CGI. Seen a good superhero movie lately? It was a fluke. Nobody involved understands why it worked and none of them are capable of getting that lightning to strike twice.

There were parts of this movie I really liked and parts I didn't care for so much. I think it's easily fixable, but most of it stems from the idea of the Marvel Movie Universe. They have to remind us that SHIELD and the Avengers still exist in this world, but they can't have them interfere, so there's a weird balance in telling these individual stories. I hope they figure it out.

Dire, tired entry in a series beginning to show its age seems to live by the credo of throwing out anything remotely resembling plot development, (except in broad strokes) so we find Tony and Pepper in relationship difficulties for no particular reason, a villian who attempts a seduction of the leading lady which goes nowhere etc. Loud, clunky and sluggish to get moving, the film also suffers from bad pacing problems -- though the underused Kingsley is a hoot in his brief scenes.

Fantastic cgi visuals, lots of iron man suit action, and it sticks pretty close to the feel of the comics. The problem is that the extremis storyline doesn't work as a concept on film that well. If just about anyone can be transmuted into a super soldier then it makes superheroes mundane. The story needed tweaking but not bad for Shane Black. It's better than the wasted effort that was Iron Man 2 at least. The Avengers callbacks were very well done and gives the franchise a sense of continuity.

I simply can't understand why everyone is so fond of this piece of junk, because really: that's what it is. The oneliners are so numerous they get irritating, the action is completely over the top and badly orchestrated (even to iron man standards) and the plot is just one big mess of quick and undetailed storylines, mixed together. The occasional ups and downs in terms of script and acting along with some shaky cam hinder this from being the best of the three Iron Man films. Most of the action is not shaky cam and easy to follow. The new suits allowed for some creative action beyond "guy in Iron Man suit shoots things with hand-light". And its funny. Shane Black is a clever director and writer (see Kiss Kiss Bang Bang if you disagree) and it comes through with an unrelenting mockery of orphans.

Shane Black brings exactly what I expected to Iron Man - creative action, a great sense of comedy underscoring some intense moments, and some nice moments both for the characters and the concept of a superhero film - innocent lives are actually saved in a thrilling sequence, rather than the cinematic focus of good guy vs bad guy. Easily the most generic and trite of all the Marvel movies. They kind of go for the PTSD angle, they have this sort of cuddly sympathy arc with a kid actor, but Robert Downey Jr just doesn't sell pain and conflict well in this role. Thematically I think it wanted to be like Logan, but doesn't pull it off. The entertainment/action sequences suffer for it, because we spend large swaths of the movie distracted by these "struggles", only to end up with generic bad guy fight.

Between Stark's inter struggle, which is very well done, along with a charismatic and fun script, Black's mark on this movie is definitely noticeable. However, lacking any punch from the antagonists. Here we see our hero at his most anxious and out of control (see his panic attacks, bedside suit scare) but also his most focused and angry (see his workshop insomnia, challenge to the Mandarin); at his most technologically dazzling and powerful (see his army of suits in a great final action scene), but also back to his most humble creative roots ("I'm The Mechanic"). This strong climactic characterization, coupled with a brilliant turn (x2) by Kingsley makes for the best film in the MCU so far.

Shane Black is such a natural fit to write Iron Man, I'm surprised it took until the third installment for him to come on board. His particular brand of irreverent humor is omnipresent, but feels surprisingly grounded and organic to the characters and story given Black's usual love for metafictional tropes. It's nice to see one of these Marvel movies with some actual balls, too. People die, often violently, and it creates real stakes - or at least, the illusion of them. It's sloppy, but fun.

The finest bit of action in the whole film is a straight on Pearce/Downey fist fight that lasts just a few seconds, but is devoid of random debis and explosions. Kingsley owns the entire film

Better than the second one, I guess. It has some fun scenes a potentially strong script and RDJ is fun to watch. I dunno, I think I just don't care much for the character or the tone of the movies, I can't pick out much that's wrong but it doesn't really excite me.

The problem with writing your main character as an unlikable narcissist is that a substantial proportion of your audience won't care at all about what happens to him or what happens in your story. Ben Kingsley's great supporting performance saves this film from being a complete waste of time.

A return to form for this trilogy, once again having the action scenes and dialogue scenes just exciting as each other. Robert Downey Jr. continues to prove that he was born to play Tony Stark and has a brilliant and contagiously fun performance of one of the only superheroes who'd rather have his face in front of the mask. Kingsley's villain is a bit silly, but his revelation is actually quite brilliant -- too bad Pierce's villain is just silly all the way through.

Turn off your brain and enjoy. Downey is great once again as Tony Stark and the film is quite funny for a superhero action movie. Comic book purists might hate what they did with Mandarin, but they wanted to keep him in the "real world", so it works. Although, if you can have people with fire blood, then you could also have a supernatural wizard without too many audience members crying foul.

I don't know, I watch for the dick Tony Stark character. The writers gave him anxiety. That's like making the Rolling Stones cover whatever punk turned into in the 00's for 2 songs mid-set..back to Archer for all my delusionally cocky lead needs. Other than that it's a standard Marvel format with an ok twist or two.

It's not the first movie. It doesn't have to be, but, it's not. And it's not the second movie but in that case, that's good in that it's better than the second movie by a decent clip. It's as vulnerable as we've ever seen Tony Stark, and the larger role being taken on by Pepper is welcomed. It's a really good villain, and yeah sure there's some silliness involved in giving out ones home address out of a vengeful rage, but that's pretty minor. Ben Kingsley owns. Spirited and entertaining.

This is much better than the 2nd, and almost as good as the first. Downey Jr. does another good job playing Tony, and everyone else is wonderful. Mandarin is much more interesting than the villain in the 2nd. The humour is on point... the tone is serious but not too serious, which the first nailed and this one nails too. It's not tackling big issues, it's just promising you fun, and that's more than enough.

Crap, it's even worse than the sequel. I don't want a whiney RD Jr with anxiety problems. I want Iron Man kicking ass. Actually count the number of minutes he's actually wearing the suit. I wouldn't be surprised if it's less than 10 minutes. And BAM (--spoiler alert--) there is a whole army of them in the last 5 minutes. Where were they when Tony was in trouble? God, what a waste of this franchise. Without Ben Kingsley this would have been a really terrible film.

Yes! Finally an action blockbuster is set during christmas again! There's even a little kid and friendly banter between him and our hero. This is almost like the early 90s again. I love it.

So it's played for laughs a bit too much to be a 'serious' super-hero movie but, unlike many other comic actioners, it's sharp enough to entertain, nearly all the way to the end. The lack of jeopardy- particularly in the final messy action sequence- diminishes its weight, but (after the plodding IM2) the switch in tone to laugh-out-loud romp is successful in my book.

My issues are all detail-driven. It's an entertaining enough actioner with enough wit to sustain consistent enjoyment, but there's little weight behind Tony's anxiety. It's a missed opportunity to incorporate elements from his alcoholic storyline from the comics. Movie versions don't owe fans carbon copies or even nods but this one would have fit very well. At least there seemed a bit more at stake here than in number 2. Just because we know he'll find a way out, doesn't make it a waste of time.

Shane Black provides a refreshing change of pace with some black humor and different direction. The Iron Man series continues to be one of the best of Marvel's efforts to make lots and lots of money.
