Cash-in movie between Ip man 2 and 3, very quickly forgotten.

This movie seemed more about the man than the fighting style. It loosely chronicles parts of his life while in Hong Kong up until his death. In that regard, it left out and bent a few too many real life details. It has a few good moments of fighting. Production quality was good. As a big fan of IP Man, Bruce Lee, and martial arts, I found it interesting, entertaining and worthwhile.

Bland and pointless.

This is more of a Bio-Drama than an action or martial arts film. The martial arts scenes are by far the weakest parts of this movie. The acting and sets are great even if you can tell this was a lower budget film. The film tells a more personal, intimate, and true to life story than the Donnie Yen Ip Man trilogy.

anthony wong does a good job portraying ip man in his later years and puts on a good show despite not being a martial artist. the plot gets murky trying to address too many points of ip man's life at once, and the action is decidedly crowbarred in during subplots more directly involving ip man's students than himself. overall, there's plenty to enjoy here, however i'm about ip man-ed out after all the ip man films of late. i rank it behind the yen ones, but ahead of all the others.
