I like that Donnie Yen always seems so disappointed in you while he's beating your face.

Oh so noble is the hero whose greatest trait is a humble attitude and whose greatest weakness is being broke - he's the opposite of Iron Man. Ip 2 is very much a formula sequel that hits all the broadest notes of the first - open on fight scene, tension between rival schools turns to begrudging respect, long take of Donnie Yen in deep repose, throw fat baby in middle of fight scene, reveal outrageous asshole villain, long take of Yen reflecting on sacrifice, end on final boss fight. It works.

I'm in the minority, but I liked this considerably more that its predecessor. It was hilarious! I don't know if much of the comedy was intentional, but I enjoyed it. Despite lots of cheese & a terrible script, there's loads here to enjoy: Pantomime English villains (something I always love!), Sammo Law punching things, Karl Urban's Oriental double Siu-Wong Fan, and watch out for the ugliest baby ever! Fights are more elborate and staged (compared to Ip Man), but not unenjoyably so.

Starts off decent, but then when the English characters appear, not only does the acting go downhill, but, worse, the film becomes *Rocky IV*--including the cheesy "let's all respect each other speech."

Again some fanciful propaganda provides a backdrop for Donnie to skilfully pummel an assortment of slightly comical naughty people. The fight scenes are once again handled well, although perhaps lacking the impact of the first film, and Yen remains very watchable. Some of the acting is fine, some of it is very odd. I'm not sure if this was meant to be taken seriously; the tone suggests that was the aim, but of course the whole thing is slightly too ludicrous for this to fly. Overall, good fun.

Still a solid martial arts film with a couple of really memorable fight sequences, but the character development is weak all around and the film as whole gets very heavyhanded.

Just like the first one, the fighting sequences are well made, but that simply won't win me over. Even though I still like the silent but skilled Ip Man character, the supporting characters are dull, the acting, especially from "the foreigners" is horrendous and the story is, just like the first one, bland. *Okay

Hello, producers of Rocky 4? I think I found who stole your script! Ip Man 2 goes full-out crazy ahistorical by pitting Ip Man against a British boxing world champion, in a match with indecipherable, seemingly arbitrary rules, wrapped in an even greater facade of nationalistic pride than was present in the first film. The Brits receive a portrayal as racist as that of east-Asians in parallel western cinema. Leading man Donnie Yen and his crooked smile are still riveting, though.

The fighting sequences are not on a par with those in the first movie from 2008. That is not the worst part, however; the impossibly wooden acting from the Western actors made their scenes positively cringeworthy. Also, the story of this sequel is even more predictable than the first movie's. Good for fans of Ip Man. If the first one left you unimpressed, don't go near this one.

While at times it feels a little to close to a Rocky movie without the overuse of montages, Ip Man knows how to keep the blood pumping with inspired one on ones. I just wish the ending battle hadn't been so contrived, no one has time for deep soul searching when they're getting the blood pummeled out of them.

Whereas Ip Man 1 successfully combined martial arts with a serious character-driven storyline, this sequel has no clue what it wants to be. The tone is very serious but there is no sign of proper characters or dialogue. Despite some spectacular set pieces, the fight scenes soon become boring and poorly choreographed with little creativity. The schlocky Van-Damme-slash-Rocky-esque finale is welcome comic relief but turns the film into a huge unintended propaganda-like farce. An Ip too far.

It's pretty much a martial arts take on Rocky 2 and 4, but it's so enjoyable! So well-written and though it may not be as good as the first, that's only because the first film set a bar so incredibly high! Donnie Yen never fails!

Though not quite as spectacular as in the first film, the martial arts scenes are very well-done and, frankly, pretty damn cool. I really like the cinematography in these films - they give a really nice old and authentic feel. Not the most unconventional of movies, but an entertaining and sincere experience nonetheless.

Awesome kung fu throughout with an all star cast, including Fan Siu Wong, Fung Hark On, Lo Meng and Kent Cheng! Donnie Yen and Sammo Hung are both incredibly fast, and their lengthy fight is the highlight of the film. Sammo's Wing Chun choreography is still the best there is, and uses a minimum of wirework.

It all comes down to the martial art scenes in these, and I suspect the more susceptible you are to them, the more you’ll appreciate the film proper. For my money, Yen lacks the screen presence to command attention during the plottier moments, but it’s difficult not to be awed by his athletic grace and abilities – it makes the film feel like an excuse for a showcase for his efforts, rather than attempting anything more insightful or meaningful. Elegantly crafted but dramatically inert.

Disappointing follow-up to the original; this one invites comparisons to the innumerable Rocky sequels. The fight choreography is well-done; Sammo Hung (cast as a villain) even gets in some wire-work. It felt like the quality of the fights went down as the movie progressed. Fans of martial arts films will enjoy, but even as a steady watcher of this genre, I couldn't help but notice that there's only about five minutes of plot to save room for the action sequences.

After Ip Man (Donnie Yen) used his fighting skills against the Japanese in the Second Sino-Japanese War, he fled to Hong Kong in 1949 and tried to establish Wing Chun fighting school there When the mighty master Hung (Sammo Hung) hears about this he sets Ip Man for difficult task He must earn necessary respect in fight against clock against fighters of all possible styles Even more danger looms from side of corrupt police officer(Charlie Mayer) &British boxing champion Twister (Darren Shahlavi).

Arguably less compelling than the first "Ip Man" from a narrative standpoint, this 2010 sequel knows how to use a simple premise as the basis for the excellent fight scenes. Even if the characterization is familiar, the spectacle is fascinating and even if the finale isn't difficult to predict, you're still on the edge of your seat, an effect only accentuated by the fact that Ip Man's integrity and humbleness are as essential to the plot as his martial arts prowess.

Again Ip Man takes down lousy, sadistic imperialists on behalf of the humble and honourable Chinese people! Cartoony nationalism aside; it's a little more gimmicky (wire-fu-ey) than the first one and not as polished but still good.

This movie was dragged down by the whole confusion and attempts to include Bruce Lee's name, and felt the movie was done mostly to satisfy people's thirst to watch Donnie Yen be an immovable, invincible fighter again. The action satisfies the itch, no doubt, but continues to be an autobiography that barely follows the actual life of Ip Man himself (although ironically more accurate than the first film).

Haven't seen Sammo Hung in quite some time. He and Donnie Yen were a good combo. These types of films still get on my nerves, yeah we get it, the British/Americans are the bad guys. It really felt like wrestling, they go out of their way in every aspect to make sure you know you shouldn't like them.

The applause that IP man received from the Westerns and his jogging to his house was pretty lame. The script of the English speaking peeps was idiotic as well. And I can't say I enjoyed to watch IP man getting a beating from an overmuscled, overzealous idiot just to recall some scripts from the past and fight like a reborn man. I watch Rocky when I wish to see this kind of stuff. Still, all the negativity pulls the movie to my mid tiers as there is pretty decent fights deserving an applause.
