If I looked like George Clooney I'd shave his butt and teach him to walk backwards. No wait, there's a dog. If I looked like George Clooney and there was a dog, I'd shave his butt and teach him to walk backwards. No, that implies he's ugly. Ok. If George Clooney looked like Catherine Zeta-Jones acting talent, I'd shave his butt and teach him to walk a dog backwards. Close enough.

A divorce lawyer going through a midlife crisis falls for the gold digging ex-wife of one of his clients, with the expected disastrous results. The plot is not as labyrinthine as other Coen scripts (Marilyn's long con is pretty obvious from the jump), and the two main characters are fairly despicable, making it hard to care about them or their potential romance. However, this one is more about the journey than the destination, and there are plenty of funny bits along the way. RIP Wheezy Joe.

Fairly entertaining rom-com, but not up to snuff with other Coen's Bros. films. Funny in parts, and both Clooney and Zeta Jones do their best with the material, but it just doesn't come completely together.

Along with The Ladykillers is the worst Coen output, mostly because the script isn't quite there but also because Zeta-Jones is a bad actress (something everyone overlooked at the turn of the millennium because of her majestic ass). Clooney is incredible though and carries this on his back.

It's better than your average romantic comedy in my opinion and it does have it's share of hilarious moments and I really enjoyed George Clooney in the lead. However it never really escapes the fact that it is a romantic comedy with it's share of cliches, which it good or bad considering what type of viewer you are. For me that's a negative.

I Really liked this movie. Joel Coen has made (again) a superb film. George Clooney was really brilliant in the role of a lawyer who's a little crazy and always funny. It was genius of Coen to do it this way, and the humor used in the film is also.. Genius.

Am I the only person who enjoyed this? A deliciously zany, quintessentially Coen plot, brilliant and brilliantly delivered dialogue, and palpable chemistry between Clooney and Zeta-Jones. It works as a comedy; it works as a romance; it works as a subversion of romantic comedies---and it does absurdity as only the Coens can.

O Brothers, What Have Ye Done? Don't get me wrong, "Intolerable Cruelty" is by no means a bad film -in fact, it's better than the average rom-com, because it is very funny in parts and the acting is top-notch, but it's not up to par with what we've come to except from the shrewd Coen brothers. The first half is good enough and features a hilarious court scene, but the second half is totally underwhelming, and employs all the typical clichés of the romantic comedy. A decent misfire.

Oh, this must be verbally punished for trying so hard to be so much, being so very nothing. Somewhere in there you can smell the witty and clever pen of the Coen's that can usually charm the most stubborn of mules. But repeatedly it's wasted; either by the underachieving, exagerated acting, or by the story that is borderline indifferent. It's a bad version of the humor in Burn After Reading, ending as a giant solicitor freak-show. I found happiness ONLY in good ol' Billy Bob, cracking as always.

The chemistry between Clooney and Jones radiates from the screen and it truly helps the plot drive home. Had anyone else attempted to play these characters whose performance is so important in conveying the plot I just don't know that it would have worked. However there still isn't much to save this movie from the abyss of medicore romantic comedies.

Is this a romantic comedy or a parody of a romantic comedy? The movie doesn't seem to know either which is what keeps it from being more than decently enjoyable. It's quite predictable and as implausible as most romantic comedies but Clooney is great and there are plenty of good jokes and Coen brothers touches scattered throughout the film.

Had low expectations going into this and it barely exceeded them. While Clooney is great and Zeta Jones is a capable adversary I just never bought their supposed Romantic interest. The twisty plot is largely predictable so we're left to the Coen Bros humour to save the film and it does ... just ... It took me nearly 20 years to bring myself to watch this and it'll probably be just as long before I watch it again.

It sags slightly in the middle, but overall this very funny screwball comedy skewers the rom-com to delicious effect, helped by snappy dialogue and smoking chemistry between the two leads. And, as usual with the Coens, there is much pleasure to be had from the bit parts too. Underrated.

Ugh. A boring flick, filled with one of the most unlikeable, shallow assortments of characters I've ever seen. George Clooney's doofy man-child is annoying, Zeta-Jones' golddigger is obnoxious, and the rest of the cast doesn't fare much better. A couple gags work- and Geoffrey Rush was pretty funny- but that isn't enough to save this movie.

Humour is a very personal thing, and I doubt the Coens wrote this thinking, "we will label it as a comedy, but we know its not funny" ... I for one think it's an amusing, often downright humorous film with simply amazing performances by Clooney and Jones, who just sizzle on screen. Most of the humour stems from their performances and Clooneys obsession with his teeth and little head movements are wonderful. This is a true "latte" of a film; light frothy, insubstantial, but satisfying.

The dialogue is zippy and almost completely hilarious - and true to Coen form, in the most ridiculous of scenarios the acting is top-notch. Thing is, some of the situations are TOO ridiculous, even in the madcap world established here. Personally, though, the positives outweigh the minuses (and wait, was that Bruce Campbell?!). Add one more to the "misunderstood subversive modern RomCom" category (along with Down With Love and Duplicity).

This isn't nearly as bad as its reputation lead me to believe. George Clooney is really good. Straight man George Clooney is always good, but crazy slapstick psychopath George Clooney really cracks me up. You know, O Brother style. He's like that for the last 20 or 30 minutes here, which makes that the best part of the film. I mean, let's be serious. This is a kind of forgettable Coen Brothers movie, but it's not their worst. It was charming and clever at times, and it made me laugh.

Although the film is enjoyable enough it's as if all those Katherine Hepburn/Spencer Tracey/Cary Grant films have been studied intensely and then put in a Preston Sturge-O-Meter and out pops Intolerable Cruelty. That said, some of the dialogue is priceless and George Clooney is frequently hilarious, but he does overcook the ham on occasion. It would be cruel to say that Catherine Zeta Jones must have found the part came naturally to her, but there - I said it anyway.

An unbearably bad movie that is extremely in love with itself. It obviously thinks it is really witty and charming and cool and fun but it actually sucks wang and isn't any of those things. There are glimmers of what makes the Coen brothers great (Especially the amount of scenes in which Clooney stammers wildly, a perfect comedic tic for him), but the whole thing feels strained, not so much off-beat as off-key, searching for big laughs and a screwball verve that just never come. However, the last 20 minutes or so, where the film relentlessly unravels, are great.
