These teen sci-fi movies (Hunger Games, Divergent, Mazerunner) all seem to blend together into one franchise like a Matrix for millenials. They have similar cinematography, tone, and plot premises, and the characters are all whitebread suburbanite archetypes. Forget about the dumb story and just space out on the trippy visuals. There are interesting sci-fi effects but otherwise it's.. same, same. You could switch the leads for any of these sci-fi franchises and the audience wouldn't notice.

Woodley is still miscast but is a good actress, and everyone else does a good job (Watts was a welcome surprise 'cuz I love her). It's a dystopian film with very little to say and tries to hide that with action sequences that are mildly entertaining. It has the worst usage of slomo that I've seen in a while in one particular scene, and I would have liked the movie a little more if it wasn't for the final act. Very predictable with slow world-building, but I kinda liked it anyway.

With less on its mind, just as much boring world-building, and a waste of an even more talented cast, about the only thing that Insurgent has going for it is that it kept its running time to under two hours, which means that, if you wind up watching it, you're wasting slightly less of your life. Outside of a 20-minute stretch when things actually start to get interesting, Insurgent is a mediocre meandering movie that'll more likely put you to sleep than raise your heartbeat even a touch.

More interesting and involving than the first, even if it is ultimately about how the fate of the world depends on finding someone who can complete a computer game all the way up to the end of level five. This sequel is made with greater flair and is also less anti-Cleisthenes than the first instalment. This series does introduce genuine narrative surprises more than does something like THE HUNGER GAMES, but this seems to go unrecognised by audiences and critics.

The idea behind the society these films take place in is interesting and the sequences where characters have to pass simulation tests for the factions are cool. Much of this movie is nothing special but Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller are good young actors and Theo James is not quite bad despite being bland and generically handsome. The adult actors fill in their roles admirably, especially Kate Winslet. On the whole this is my favorite of the distopian teen film series.

Meh. While the first movie still somehow engaged the viewer and made you care for the characters, this movie's just a series of bad scenes where you either watch Theo's muscular body and determined gaze, Shailene cry, or Kate Winslet be a b***h. Accompanied by a very weak plot, it reminds me of the Hunger Games franchise a lot, but it's even worse than that.

The first one was ponderous and self-important and pretty much insisted that we suspend our disbelief. In this one, I'm happy to report, shit actually happens. The heroes actually BAND TOGETHER and GET STUFF DONE and KILL BAD GUYS and WIN BATTLES--all stuff that they haven't managed to pull off in the HUNGER GAMES movies yet. And the slate gets wiped clean at the end, which leaves me excited for part three. I'm not quite on Team DIVERGENT yet, but good job, people.

The best things I can say about this are as follows. I think it's better than "Divergent", Woodley is better (still a shade melodramatic, but shades are better than eclipses), and I actually ended up caring about certain things this time. Teller is 100% pure bag of dicks, but he's convincing. Winslet is even better. However, and I'm not one to cry "predictability" very often, I found the climax to be VERY predictable in its message and its execution -- WITHOUT having read the source material.

The direction of this installment is slicker in a more conventional way, but, while not perfect in the first, it had an idiosyncratic flavour that complemented the subtext. That subtext is drastically reduced in the second film. I'm not satisfied with the way it's handled, but I would maintain that in some way this narrative and adaptation is an important one in political terms (the popular incarnations of political discussion must necessarily be somewhat watery to reach its audience I wager).

While the whole series boasts a strong production and good effects, it's a sobering thought that a garbage plot just doesn't matter to the 15-25 demographic, that adept storytelling is a non-issue to the youth of today. Further expanding on the already simultaneously generic and wholly nonsense world built in the previous installment, the faults run deep in this one. But rest assured, if the prime features of Dauntless are pleather and what can only be described as frolicking, teens will pay.

Dreary sequel loses much of the charm of the first instalment, for the most part thanks to Woodley's curiously uninspired performance, especially compared to her highly charismatic one in the previous episode. A well stocked supporting cast does its best with the rudimentary dialogue but is never given a chance to distinguish itself; some occasionally exciting action scenes stop the film from becoming a major bore.

inSURGEnt! Well, this movie didn't have the intensity of a surge soda commercial but it did have some interesting action sequences. What I can't get over in this series is how much it feels like it has ripped off ideas from everything around it. This has a Harry Potter feel, a Maze Runner feel, a Matrix feel...etc. The movie doesn't really have a good identity of its own. It is trying to be Divergent like in the movie, a bit of everything...

I liked this one a little bit better than the original. The pacing is much improved, especially in the second act, and the action is fresher. I still don't think Jai Courtney or Theo James have much presence as a villain or hero, respectively. I 'm also done with having these wonderful female actors playing boring bureaucratic villains (compare Winslet to some of the roles Jodie Foster and Sigourney Weaver have had of late).

I found this one to be largely dull, and I didn't really care about what was happening. The characters are bland, the world is derivative, and only the smallest effort is applied to get the story moving. Woodley seemed to be phoning it in, and none of the other performances are noteworthy either. The 3rd act was a whole lot better than what came before it, and I'll admit that I am a little curious as to what's going to happen in Allegiant, but it was still far from being a good movie.

I got to see an early screening of Insurgent, as it takes on a different path in many sequences that are nowhere in the book, while keeping other events similar. Overall, I enjoyed the movie. It is way more action packed than the Divergent, with lots of really cool special effects, it kept me glued to the screen the whole time! Due to the large scope of the movie's action sequences, this movie is pretty cool. I am looking forward to the third installment. I do recommend to fans of action films

Worse than Divergent. Woodley and Theo Jones had no chemistry whatsoever. And now Naomi Watts is in this as well as Kate Winslet. Just how much money do these producers have to spend on these really bad movies, I really wonder. My guess is slightly less than, but close to an average Marvel movie?

Shailene Woodley & Theo Jones make a great duo and they were sometimes mesmerizing. Personally, I would rather not have Kate Winslet as the super villain, but it worked. The story has a lot of action, but perhaps fewer moments to really connect with than the original. The CGI was both amazing & over used. I particularly liked how they undermined the theme at the end, pulling the rug out from under the story. However, it was entirely ridiculous that they had never explored beyond the wall.

Being a thematically inconsistent mess wouldn't be so bad if the film weren't such a bluntly constructed commentary on individuality and government. Or if it weren't also a narrative mess that is heavily in love with dream sequences. Or if it weren't terribly acted. It does at least keep things moving, so while it will make you roll your eyes it probably won't also make you fall asleep.

Insurgent is bland. It's full of action, stunts and CGI; but there is no suspense. Actually one of my major complaints is that the film is more style over substance. Woodley's character is annoying at best and boring for the rest. The only character moments that are enjoyable are Teller's. While lots of "moments" drag, the film's saving grace is that its 2hr runtime doesn't feel that long.

Divergent 2. Saw Divergent (2014) in the cinema and acceptable entertainment. Insurgent (2015) however struggles to find a feasible story and simply doesn't engage all that much. A much lesser 2nd part of a 4-part series. Might build up to something more exciting for the franchise climax, but judging by Insurgent they better have a much more spectacular game plan for Allegiant (2016/2017) to hit that peak because this one only helped lower expectations.

Ooooh man I think this one really is better now I didn't read the book. Still, it's a weak movie. Still tons of plot holes but that's just a given with the source material, long stretches of nothing-really-happens paired with too much angsty teen love stares between Woodley and James - ugh, please, no. The ending was 20 minutes of actually enjoyable action and leaves for a pleasant yet not that strong cliffhanger. I'll probably go see the last one just for closure anyways.

The Divergent series is one of the weaker sci-fi dystopian YA adaptations/franchises. It has no philosophy, teachable moments, or a relatable entry point for young people. The world is very silly & illogical. And you don't get the otherworldly action that fanboy cinema deserves. It gets a marginal recommendation as Teller & Woodley make this interesting with their onscreen personas. Woodley, in particular continues great chemistry with 3 actors she's already had fantastic onscreen moments with.

Roth's already strained societal metaphor breaks this time around as the dystopia's designers aims r explained insuring the "rationale" behind this society makes no sense whatsoever. Still, there r some thrilling action scenes, interesting CGI sequences & Woodley's at her best, even if the script shortchanges her, never allowing us to believe that the character has legitimate cause to be so wracked with shame & experiencing all the emotional turmoil which the actress so convincingly delivers.

The second installment looks even better than the first with some really cool scenes from the "sims" in particular. Woodley is solid again and her character's personal plight remains captivating, while Teller is fantastic as a bad guy/good guy/jerk and Winslet is again a great villain. All of that said, the film's overload of easy and implausible plot movements throughout distracts from the great characters and prevents it from reaching the same level as its predecessor.

I liked the story a lot better as well and I felt connected to the world on screen from start to finish. Time flew by. There are some slow scenes but I thought they fitted well and were effective in what they were trying to accomplish. By the end I was ready to watch the next instalment, which will hopefully live up to the quality of this film.
