Another great movie by one of Hollywood's best, Christopher Nolan. I was really into this movie, Al Pacino is awesome, but I think Williams is not the best choice for Dormer's opponent, cause he always has something friendly in his eyes. A thing that does not really fit. Despite some minor flaws "Insomnia" convinced absolutely

A intriguing and well-written thriller, it feels shallower than many of Nolan's other offerings. Robin Williams also seems perhaps a bit out of place in his role. But the movie otherwise seems to mostly achieve what it set out to do and be.

Everything is decent. Pacino's performance is pretty good but not great due to a lack of character depth. Robin Williams doesn't exactly have enough screen time for his performance to impress too much, even if it is one of his darker roles and played very well at that. I've seen it a couple of times, but it isn't all that memorable.

I actually watched this movie while dealing with a bit of insomnia, and I gotta say, it helped! The movie really captures the feeling of sleeplessness and (as is to be expected by a Christopher Nolan film) puts you directly in the characters' point of view in a way that few other movies can.

Just a couple comments having lived in Alaska: 1) Nightmute is far enough south that it does get dark for a couple hours, even on the summer solstice, and 2) especially for that area there was a definite imbalance of the white/native ratio. Those didn't really make the movie worse, but I did notice them.

The story, while morally complex, fails to engage. There are fine performances all around, also well crafted scenes, but at the end of the day two uncomfortable characters agree a little too quickly to help each other out, whilst not having quite enough cat and mouse play to elevate the story beyond the strictly average. Thus the movie never seems to twist for a second on its road to a very often visited end station.

The Norwegian policier of a few years earlier, and of the same name, is resettled under the midnight sun of Alaska. Fair enough. (The icy moonscape of the opening aerial shots is no less otherworldly.) Pacino plays up the sleep deprivation for all it's worth, and a good deal more, looking as if he's trying to win a marathon staring contest and speaking in a come-and-go drawl that sounds less regional in origin than medical or medicinal.

By FAR my least favorite Nolan feature (and probably not coincidentally his only one he didn't co-write), but it's still got some creepy highlights and and a stark, tense style - let's call it "Alaskan noir." The murder mystery story just isn't as interesting as Nolan's other films. Pacino's performance is okay; he mostly resists the urge to Pacino out on us, and Williams is interestingly cast.

Insomnia is a mystery thriller about a brutal murder in a small town, internal affairs, accidents and difficult decisions. "The gray of morals" is the main driver of this detective story, although one could discuss its essence. Viewers will probably be torn between animosity, sympathy or depravity of the protagonists. The best sequences are those that describe and visualize the verbal confrontation between the detective and the killer. The acting is very good in character turmoil.

It's an ok one-watch movie: interesting enough to keep my interest throughout. But that is just so far below what it should be as a Nolan movie. The mystery isn't engaging, and the metaphors are so ham-fisted (get it: the cop can't sleep????). A dropped ball for a master filmmaker.

Pacino's cop performances tend to range from really good to cliche, but here he turns in a uniquely human performance, possibly his best since Serpico. Williams, on the other hand, doesn't do much to outshine any of his other villainous performances, which is fair, but not great. The story feels like it was meant for an hour-long special, so the pacing is a bit off. It's compelling enough, and a good indicator of Nolan's development within his craft.

For the negatives: the script wasn't written by Nolan, so there's none of the usual Nolanisms - twisty nonlinearity and entertaining puzzle-like structuring with vast scope and huge bombastic setpieces to throw money at.

Based on Norwegian crime thriller, Insomnia is not only Christopher Nolan sleeper hit but it is arguably one of the best american remake. Nolan manages to capture the beauty of Alaska while at the same time uses its cold, moody atmosphere to bring up that sense of mystery. Both Al Pacino and Robin Williams deliver their best performance by engaging the audience with their subtle and masterful back-to-back dialogue. This is an immersive, suspenseful thriller eloquently crafted by Nolan

Insomnia is a solid thriller from Christopher Nolan and it shows how high the standard of his filmmaking is when this is branded his weakest film. It's fitting to see a director of Christopher Nolan's calibre collaborating & getting the last great performance out of the legendary Al Pacino. And Robin Williams is such a shrewd casting choice and he is remarkably convincing playing against type. The impressive editing is integral to the suspense and Wally Pfister's cinematography is stunning.

Pacino tones it down, Williams is excellent, but the plot is a little too on-the-nose and takes damn ages to get going - neither of these issues is what I look for in a crime thriller, but Nolan isn't subtle, and he almost makes up for it here with some excellent cinematography, but it's all a little too hackneyed to let me indulge in the film's mystery fully.

A slowly building psychological drama/thriller that manages to be mysterious, intriguing and a little unsettling. It's Pacino's performance that draws us in and we can see the effects the guilt, stress and lack of sleep has on Dormer's mind, the morality tale of the story is actually just as interesting as the the mystery part. Williams is also good in an unusual role.

Nolan's coda to Memento is just as tight and enigmatic, with superior performances. Not as unconventional as Memento, his first studio feature is still a commanding, perceptive thriller that illustrates a subtle strength in coalescing matters of contrition, subjective experience and procedural plot into a Hollywood parcel, a sophisticated, perfectly confident transition to big-budget, star-driven filmmaking long since overshadowed by what epic scale into which it was key to catapulting him.

Phew. Finally, a movie that I was actually engrossed in for at least 90% of its duration. Nolan might just be my favourite American director, not including the Batman stuff (which is also pretty good, to be fair). Loses a bit of steam towards the end and the insomnia part is actually kinda silly (as is the villain's final words. Seriously, c'mon), but Pacino's great and the female lead looks otherworldly, so I dug just about everything else.

A very good film about truth, guilt, and the often compromised world in which they exist. Detective Dormer is the insomniac that suffers the perpetual influx of light and a similar level of scrutiny. As he investigates a murder case he becomes increasingly uncertain of his own motivations and morality. A very tense film that shows how rapidly good intentions can go awry and a detective's swift descent into a sleep deprived nightmare. A good story with acting and themes to match.
