a pointless prequel that was probably made just to make money off infernal affairs which was a great movie

This prequel adds to the first infernal affairs by fleshing out the motivations of the characters a bit more. There's enough substance that it doesn't feel like a blatant cash-in on the first. The plot can be murky at times and the characters can get confusing because Edison Chen and Shawn Yue look identical in some scenes. Overall it's a beautifully shot film especially the Hong Kong '97 handover scenes. The Wai Keung Lau/Siu Fai Mak directing duo is like the Hong Kong version of Michael Mann.

Hard to understand who is who and what is what. Poor character development. Unclear character motivation. Also smelled a lot of Godfather in this.

Strong acting from Wong & Tsang and solid performances from the rest of the cast. The film is more low key than the first and the plot isn't as tightly written. It's a great movie but not the classic the first one was.

Same problem with this that I had with the first film: it's all style, with very little in the way of substance. The cinematography is great, and the music is used to good effect, but the plot is so confusing I found it virtually impossible to follow what was going on. I may as well have turned the subtitles off and made up my own story for the first half. It does start to come together towards the end, but by that time I had stopped caring.

It's a good film, but I think I may have liked it more if it stood on its own. The story is a bit hazy and not nearly as punchy as the first one. The big problem for me is that the backstory Part 2 creates for the characters of the first film really does not connect to how they were previously portrayed. These don't feel like the same characters at all. It's also hard to reconcile many elements of this backstory with the setup we find at the beginning of its chronological successor.

A prequel to the original hit. Significant improvement in cinematography but the plot is inferior to the original. The plot also lacks suspense because whoever that appears in the original is going to survive in this film. I feel that this should have been chosen as the first Infernal Affairs film.

Solid sequel with excellent moments but it's awfully convoluted and sprawling. I never really got into any of the characters so the twists were the main thing keeping me going.

I watched part 1 about a year ago; I thought I had forgotten all the ancillary characters, many of whom seem to come back to become main characters in their own right. But, boy, you need a running scorecard to keep up with all the corpses that piled up, and the long entwined stories that went with them. Still fun, even when it seems like it's ripping off the Godfather storylines.

Second part of trilogy. When usually sequels are not as goods than first movies, then is pretty clever to make second movie as prequel. When prequel is good then viewers do like to see the first movie again and buy the ticket or dvd. Infernal Affairs II is pretty decent movie

Overwrought and superficial, yet manages to deliver suspense and shock.

Same level than the previous one. More complicated on the first part I think that an hour and a half would serve well.

The weakest of the trilogy. A confusing plot and a background that's way out of sync with what we're shown in the first movie.

This movie is a prequel to the first part Infernal Affairs. This movie develops the motives for the characters in the first part. The film is made well and there are a few twists but predictable. A good entertainer.

In some aspects I liked this one better than the first part. It doesn't rush itself. There are plenty of time for character development. Of course story isn't as impressive, and the way how it tried to be Godfather 2 bothered me quite a bit, however this film shouldn't be overlooked, especially by those who liked the first one.

Cons: Every once in awhile, something feels like it's just trying too hard to reference the first film. (I don't know if I can hear that song again. You know, THAT song.) Also, in a couple scenes, the stakes aren't as high as they should be since, being a prequel, we know what happens (or doesn't) to a few of the characters. That being said... Pros: Everything else. Seriously. Directing, acting, fleshing out characters, plot & character twists, cinematography (to a lesser extent), and more.

Improves vastly on the first. Like the first, it's a bit hard to follow at first, but like the first it just gets better and better. Great stuff.
