I just saw John Carpenter in concert and the clips from this movie made it look like the coolest thing that has ever been. NOTHING HAPPENS for a good 70% of this, but that other 30%, oh baby, you better believe I read Sutter Cane.

It's kind of amazing that the movie has both the restraint and pure balls to let a Lovecraftian Cthulhu end-of-the-world scenario play out entirely off-screen, as the horror here is not the apocalypse, or tentacled monsters, but the trapped claustrophobia of being stuck in a fiction with no free will, your life literally on tracks in front of you. Neill sells the descent perfectly, and Carpenter is in fine form -- perhaps his last best work before losing touch. King and Lovecraft would be proud.

Lots of Lovecraft in this & its all made well enough w/ some good actors, especially Neill, so why did it take so long for me to feel interested or invested? I'm not sure, but maybe it might have helped to know that Neill's character was losing something - a family; a chance at a new life. He's such a cynical loner, nothing seems to matter. The creatures also never shocked or creeped me out. Del Toro's monsters are much creepier. Also: the ending negates why Neill's character was needed at all.

The 1990's is the decade where Carpenter seems to really lose interest in filmmaking. He makes some really terrible films, a couple of okay films based on good ideas, and this film which is the best of them, partly because it has the best ideas and a great lead performance from Sam Neill. It's still not up to his early standards, but it's a consistently enjoyable outing with great ideas. There's a kind of stilted awkwardness to the film

This film has one of the best unbroken shots in cinema, as some ax-wielding dude, from all the way across the street, one step at a time, approaches the window of a restaurant. We see it happening; the protagonist doesn't. Then shatter! Masterful direction. Thanks, Carpenter!

Only John Carpenter can have Sam Neill with a face full of drawn-on crosses and not make it look ridiculous. I think half of this film is spent in the hotel. I am not going to begin to pretend I fully understand the plot, but I just strapped in and felt it wash over me.

A rickety construction that seems to be missing connective tissue, which is mildly confusing but not quite maddening. There's a great detail I have to give props to - the main character's car is obnoxiously dirty the whole time. Movie cars are always so clean, feels engaging to have one begging for "wash me" to be written into the rear window. Actually, it kind of drove me nuts. At one point, I started rubbing the screen, my TV turned off, and in the empty reflection...I was Sam Neill! Spooky.

Not really scary, as such - especially when you realize it's basically every Silent Hill story, with Stephen King as a villain - but it has great moments. A lot of the horror visuals are inspired, and Sam Neill holds the film together. It takes a great actor to scream in terror at the color blue.

This is an absolutely mesmerizing and chilling mix of wrong-man suspense, metafilm and supernatural horror, in which the master finds room to write a beautiful love letter to cinema. Here, fiction is a plague that drives people insane, causes a mass chaos and extinction. The man who initially refused to believe how disturbing and real Cane's fiction was is actually the writer's final protagonist. He watches, as we do, everything on the big screen, laughing and crying. GOAT'S GOAT.

Probably the most accurate representation of the Lovecraftian mythos on film. While it has moments of cheese, on the whole it is a magnificently scripted film that captures the true essence of Lovecraft--the inevitability of our demise and the frailty of our conventional reality perfectly detailed within the scope of a couple of hours. Simply stunning.

Carpenter and De Luca explore the idea that "sanity" and "reality" are shaped by consensus. The scenario brims with Lovecraftian allusions, starting with the title, a takeoff on H.P.'s _In the Mountains of Madness_. This is rich in dark satire and delivers a goodly number of genuine jolts. Besides, it's hard not to admire any flick savvy enough to include a choice clip from _Robot Monster_.

This movie is asking are we closing madness outside or inside of madhouse. Sam Neill dives (litteraly) into the horrors of the fiction novel. There is not much of character development and acting is not the best of all time, but film is very entertaining horror flick from John Carpenter. Same cathergory than The Kovak Box, but better set than that.

I've never read any of Lovecraft's work so the movie seems fresh and original to me where it would apparently seem derivative to those unfamiliar with Lovecraft. I found this movie to be amazing though. The insanity, the crazy jagged storytelling and the meticulous plot make this movie work in spite of an awful female lead. There's also some humor worked in there in case the rest is simply not awesome enough.

Carpenter has a complete leave of his senses here, starting relatively slowly and even sluggishly, before taking a hand brake turn into crazy town, amping up the visual effects and taking best advantage of Prochnow’s strange screen presence as the demented author. An unwillingness to engage narratively with his material makes this a sometimes cold and distancing experience; outside of Neill and Prochnow, he doesn’t give his distinguished horror cast a great deal to do.

I really loved In the Mouth of Madness. It is a movie that was aimed right for me. I loved the Alan Wake games. I really like the idea of a writer or creator being able to bring one of their works to live. Sam Neill is really good in this movie. He starts out as straight-laced as they come and by the end of the movie he is a frothing madman. I couldn't see anybody else playing the part. The rest of the casting was standard fare for a John Carpenter movie; solid. I will watch it again for sure.

This had very mixed reviews upon release but has gotten more love as time has passed, and I think the newer audiences are right. It's a Lovecraftian film told like a Stephen King story that really captures the vibes and atmosphere of Lovecraft and his ideas well but actually has competent dialogue and characters to go with it. Would make a fascinatingly diverse double feature with 2006's Stranger than Fiction. Legitimately frightening at times.

This absolutely rules as a psychological horror. Feels like it's torn directly from the pages of 90s Stephen King, self-referential and all. Loaded with creepy imagery, fun tension, and delightful homages to King and Lovecraft, this is undeservedly underrated amongst Carpenter's filmography.

In the Mouth of Madness represents the last of great John Carpenter and the world has not been the same since. Neill is great at the center and this is still the best on-screen representation of Lovecraft's ideas. It's not the most consistent film nor does it maintain it's atmosphere for the entire runtime but it does remain a great little flick about the end of the world.

A bit of an exercise rather than a genuine story, with both the tale that goes back and forth with reality and the quick-cutting random very '90s editing are initially entertaining, but ultimately exhausting. There are some fun moments, like when he keeps trying to drive away and the film's very meta ending, but they don't really add to the horror or any kind of message/reason.

This film has 2 interesting ideas: what if Stephen King's novels drove his readers into axe-wielding maniacs; and what if Derry and Castle Rock were actual spooky towns in Maine. Unfortunately, the execution is piss poor and forgettable and felt like a low-budget "Outer Limits" episode. By the end it failed to hold my attention.

This kind of stuff is definely made for me. The Lovecraftian horror, the slow sinking into madness, the body horror, the psychological horror, uncertainty of what is real and what is not. Sam Neill does a brilliant job in the main role and while the special effects are somewhat outdated, they still work perfectly for this movie. The ending is a lot more daring than is usual for a lot of horror movies and it just made me like this movie more.

Carpenter's jettisoned his trademark minimalist style, causing some confusion on release, but this Lovecraftian homage is his most structurally complex film. Like Kane, he is having fun playing with the audiences' perceptions, as the whole concept of reality begins to fold in on the characters, and in turn, on us. Neil gives his best performance as a cynical investigator entangled in Kane's demonic web, and the ending with him in a movie theater is an exhilaratingly bleak black comic knockout.

In the Mouth of Madness has Carpenter attempting his most direct Lovecraft tribute yet, complete with genuinely disturbing imagery and special effects that rival The Thing. There's evidence of evolution here but also the opposite. Carpenter's lost his sense of restraint, as evident by the awkward soundtrack that knocks off Metallica's Black Album and the lame dialogue and performances. It helps that the climax is the horror's height, and where the characters talk the least so emotions take over.

Astonishingly under-appreciated (not to mention not easily available) John Carpenter mid-period horror film. Provides a knowingness and commentary on the nature of reality, fiction, complicity and spectatorship much the same as Wes Craven's New Nightmare and Scream also did, and as excellent as those two films are, this surpasses it. It is also genuinely scary.

An awesome combination of H.P. Lovecraft and Stephen King. As a sidenote, the DVD features the worst commentary ever. It is the director with the lighting guy, and they talk about how many and what lights were used, and where. That's all they talk about for the whole movie. Brilliant idea there, bringing in the lighting guy to talk about lights... because that is what people want to know about, not any of that boring production crap, no sir, the lights are where it's at.
