In the Land of Blood and Honey

For a directorial debut, this is impressively accomplished work from Jolie. Allied with a veteran director of photography, her film works great in terms of style. The line between wallowing in the ugliness of tragedy and shying away from it can be elusive and Jolie doesn't do the latter. If anything, a few maniacal laughs and evil grins is pushing it. With one relationship mirroring the country's conflicts, her script comes off a bit reductive, maybe, but the biggest drawback is the male lead.

A topic that desperately needs films abused for a romance. Technically not so good.
