Well I loved it. I thought the music was really well written, produced, and performed. Most of the acting is really good, Ramos, Barrera and Merediz being the standouts for me. I enjoyed seeing this side of Washington Heights in musical form and I thought the pacing was pretty great, and this is coming from someone who tends to avoid musicals because they usually feel as long as they are for me. I just really vibed with this one. Will definitely being watching it again.

I think In the Heights relies more on subtle storytelling than I expected after being immersed in the world of Hamilton as my example of Lin-Manuel Miranda's genius. It took longer for this to take hold as a genius work in my mind because of that, but its carefree, easygoing nature fits incredibly well with the way its characters interact with each other and their situations. There is a TON of heart here, and I love it for that. I think I need to rewatch this to truly see how great it is.

The choreography is quite often a little to reminiscent of soft drink commercials, but then again some of the musical numbers are quite sublime. In particular, Olga Merediz has a song about the experiences of recent immigrants that really connects on a human level. I have seen better musicals ... but not from this century.

Sheer delight watching this movie doing the fastest woke-to-cancelled speedrun that I’ve ever seen in the media. It can be annoying - the Nina character with her whole “I’m so out of place and discriminated against in college as a super hot chick with a slightly mocha complexion!” Lol ok sure. Victim complex nonsense. That said the songs are pretty catchy. “In the Heights!” “Tell me something I don’t know!” “Look at the fireworks!” All stuck in my head for days now.

I often get a sort of "pleased-with-himself" vibe from Miranda's lyrics, and while that's still true here, the music is generally infectious enough to counter that. My main issues lie with everything between the songs. The story and characters are a mess; a lot of different ideas and themes are strung together and ultimately get dissatisfyingly tangled. As a result, I never really engaged with this thing beyond the music. Thankfully, there's a lot of it - and the cast is quite good to boot.

In the Heights was one of the only Broadway musicals I've ever seen, so for years, I've been looking forward to watching this film and it doesn't disappoint. This musical is filled to the brim with not only captivating, celebratory music, but it's also made really well from a cinematic approach. There's very little to complain about here.

I deliberately did not experience the Broadway version, so I'm not comparing to that. Great musical numbers, heartfelt story, well shot & edited. Lin-Manuel Miranda is a genius.

Plays like an extended ad for Coca-Cola or whitewashed Broadway hip-hop/ballads or whatever Lin-Manuel is supposed to be good at. Great opening though: people introduce themselves, good energy, good vibes. Then stalling, oppressive dance and song numbers/doe-eyed nonsense melodrama for two hours. Our somewhat depressed hero has no game, so what's that ending? I also find it kind of ironic that everyone in the "I have a dream" world of film wants to go to NYC and these characters long to get out.

From a personal standpoint, I'm super disappointed at how they pared back the Benny/Nina storyline (one of the parts of the original show that was most meaningful to me) but I still think they did a great job updating the story and adapting it to the big screen.

I wasn't at all familiar with the culture and community of Washington Heights, but I'm definitely glad I am now. I love exposing myself to anything outside of my own way of living. I thought all of the performances were really well-acted with Ramos and Barerra standing out. All of the music felt on brand with Miranda's stylistic writing and flow, and I thought the cast did a great job with it. An underrated film that any fan of musicals should definitely see! I give 9 lottery tickets out of 10.

Despite numerous narrative gaps the movie feels very long, ultimately failing to paint a very affecting portrait of its titular neighbourhood, though it certainly has its moments (the carnaval, the wall dance). That the men get Miranda's famous hybrid raps and the women are stuck with straightforward broadway-ballad fare is disappointing. Miranda's "cameo" was exactly the fat that should have been trimmed.

This should probably be the first film you return to theatres for because it feels like a well-deserved reprieve. It's easy to nitpick films like this because it doesn't necessarily do anything remarkable, but after the last year and a half maybe it's okay to leave our cynicism at the door. Especially for a film so proud and bursting with joy. Less slice-of-life, more entire-pie and therefore somewhat spread thin, but it works so hard to entertain. I actually preferred its broad scope.

Do you like musicals and good movies? Very sweet, wonderful, energetic. I am a huge fan of Lin Manuel Miranda and he manages to take any project he is involved in to upside level. It will make you happy to watch such a positive and entertaining musical after the Covid era (at least while the cases are decreasing). You can cry. it manages to impress in both ways. Finally, the wonderful performances of Anthony Ramos and Melissa Barrera will not be forgotten, They are very beautiful.

Storywise, this is lacking. Why the hardcase girl has any interest in the dreamer lead is never made clear & neither is the status between the other couple. Both relationships feel like contrived placeholders for the climax. Other questions: does Stanford not have Latino-centric groups? What happens to the black guy's dream? I kept watching b/c of the upbeat musical energy, but as a Latino from the Heights, I'm still unclear what's so great about living there other than this Disneyfied community

There are some good choices of shots and set pieces to tie the music into, but other times it's just characters singing in a bit of a bland and uninteresting way. The plot meanders somewhat and alot of characters to juggle around. In the end, there's just enough in there to hold my interest all the way without getting too bored. That being said, there's not really any song I could say I remember or would listen to. At best it's a mediocre Musical, at worst it doesn't stay with you.

As long as you can handle a little cheese, this is a surprisingly dense collection of important stories, filled with incredibly creative sequences, stunning choreography, heart, and personal care for each character's struggle. It's also a lot of fun and designed for the big screen.

An absolute joy, with incredible lively visuals that match perfectly with the energetic, exuberant music. It’s corny as shit, but if that bothers you, bite me!!!!! The changes and additions to make it more political and relevant to 2021 were very good, but they came at the expanse of the Nina and Benny story, which now feels extremely truncated and half-baked. Still, it captures the spirit of the original as well as any Broadway adaptation I’ve ever seen, and I can’t wait to watch it again

This is one of my favorite musicals strictly from a song and dance standpoint and it translates really well to the big screen. It's a bit heavy on the product placement and there's one scene near the end that seems out of place compared to the rest of the film, but those are minor nitpicks.

I have many conflicting and complex thoughts about this movie, first-gen hispanic culture, and Miranda himself. One thing I really enjoyed was how the filmmakers decided to add depth to the music with bold cinematography. Overall, the film is worth a watch but I wouldn't recommend it to everyone.

The introductory titular number at the beginning of the film is genre-definingly exceptional, and the Busby Berkeley-inspired choreography in '96.000' reach the same, ehm, heights. So, just like 'Hamilton', it peaks too soon, and the storyline, while not bad, is kind of a letdown. I'm definitely still down for more Miranda musicals, though!

Severely disappointed in this movie. The first I saw from Lin-Emanuel Miranda was Hamilton. I thought it was good and have watched a few of those animated children's movies too and they were enjoyable. This crap movie did not engage me at all. I was bored after less than 15 minutes.

While following the motions of a classic musical, it did have some pretty moving moments. It's a fun movie which unfortunately skips some really good songs of the Broadway production (Enough being my personal favourite).

Laboured film at least has exuberant performances to prop it up, but Chu’s uneven staging saps any life out of the musical numbers; the rows of synching dancers are aesthetically pleasant, but the rhythm and framing is often slack and imprecise; further dragged down by Miranda’s score which finds one initially interesting note and bangs it repetitively into tedium. Bounces along on the cast’s enthusiasm for some of the time (hooray for Jimmy Smits!), but can’t overcome its inherent flaws.

I think my pros and cons are much like Hamilton. This has a lot of great music, but there are other scenes where you think why exactly does this song need to be here, especially when there are moments when dialogue is sung a bit too much where it feels over the top. However, for the most part, it's pretty fun, and filled with interesting characters. I probably enjoyed this more than Hamilton overall, but there's obviously a lot of similarities stylistically.

Washington Heights, brought to you by Beats by Dr.Dre. For a musical, there are not a lot of bangers. Songs are functional but I am thoroughly left in my seat, admiring the formal touches (but not the romantic wall climb) and the charisma of Anthony Ramos. The rest of the cast are decent outside of Leslie Grace, but that might unfairly be because of a likeness to Candace Owens. Speaking of subjectivity, the almost terrifying beauty of Melissa Barrera makes it hard for me to rate her performance.
