I saw this one in theaters on a whim and, for the life of me, I can't figure out why. Were all of the other shows sold out? Was nothing else playing? Because
I just don't understand what the appeal could have been. Aside from a tired looking Quaid, predictable plot and an underused Johansson; the only thing this movie offers audiences is a reason why Topher Grace will never have a career as a leading man. This is easily the blandest, most forgettable film I have ever paid any amount of to see.

Rewatching this after 15 years, I am struggling to know why I loved this so much. It's overwrought and each character is playing a type. Clark Gregg is playing Business Villain. Dennis Quaid is Overprotective Family Man. Johansson is only a character in how she relates to the two male leads, and we never see her beyond that. Each scene seems to end with The Shins or an Iron & Wine song, giving it a sentimentality that the film does not earn. Still, the film manages to be charming.

"Meh" in every sense of the word. I forget who it was, but someone once said one of the great questions in modern film is, "Does Dennis Quaid have a fan base?" This film only deepens the mystery.

It's better than many in it's genre. It's oftentimes more subtle than what you'd expect, which is only a good thing. You can never know where it's going. It's pretty uneventful though, and the blatantly cliche character development is slightly annoying towards the end.

A fun little feel-good movie that doesn't follow the usual Hollywood formula. Everyone here is dynamite together, and I really dug Topher Grace here. It's a date movie the guy will enjoy, and a movie that'll please anyone with high estrogen levels. Good stuff.

I know a better movie lingers in here somewhere but as a sort-of romantic comedy and a surrogate father-son relationship movie it never really resonates as either.

Well known director's Paul Weitz movie. His creations have been good to watch and rather enjoyable. This time everything and -body worked nicely together. The script is a bit soft and some scenes kind of senseless. But that's same in real life.

Almost 2 hours of nothing, hardly any comedy, extremely thin and weak plot, only made halfway bearable by the performance of almost all the actors involved, especially Topher!

Pretty good except for when the daughter jumps the guy on their first date. My wife was bummed that the guy and girl don't get back together at the end.

I have no doubt that this movie would have sucked regardless of the presence of Dennis Quaid, but my god does that man manage to suck the life and joy out of every scene he's in. Why in the world is he such a prolific actor?

Great performances from Dennis Quaid & Topher Grace; Quaid is likeable and absolutely believable, while Grace does a very nice job playing a broken young man. The movie does a great job balancing comedy & drama, and for the most part feels very realistic.

Smart. relevant social comedy tackles a variety of modern-day ills in a consistently entertaining way. Breakout role for Grace, who's perfect as the corporate climber who finds that his life is empty.

Charming, good-hearted, and well-acted. Quaid, as usual, is the man. I don't usually care for the plight of the corporate man, but this movie was realistic enough about generational shift that I cared about everyone in it.

This movie so wonderful! I adore it! The story lines are wonderfully put together and beautifully written, very clever, cute, charming, and touching. It's well acted and I don't ever feel cheated out of something or as though something wasn't resolved. There are many great "messages" in this story, and it's always a pleasure to watch!

I give this movie big kudos for not going where I thought it was going to go at every turn. It's not often these days that you find a dramatic comedy that's not predictable. I don't really dig Dennis Quaid, but he was passable. Scarlett and Grace were excellent however.
