Despite playing just over two hours, at no point does a St. Bernard appear. I don't even think Charles Grodin is in it!

Plays out like a combination of Citizen Kane and, to a much lesser degree, Amadeus, though it is nowhere near as good as either. While Gary Oldman is fantastic the movie comes across as a bit of a disjointed piece. That is not to say it's bad, it's most certainly not, it has it's moments of excellence but on a whole it isn't great. Still it's worth watching if for nothing else than Oldman's fantastic performance. I'd rather watch Amadeus though.

Always destined to be an also-ran to Amadeus, right down to its flashbacks-after-the-title-character's death gimmick, but the quality of Oldman's performance (portraying a character much older than he was at the time for most of his screentime), the lush production design and of course the grand Beethoven music it's set to itself make it quite watchable.

Only as devoted fan of Beethoven music and G.Oldman performance I can say it's worth a watch.

Ludwig van Beethoven, amid a fin-de-siecle altered the course of music theory and style unlike few before, and after him. And Oldman's portrayal of Beethoven captures the tormented heart of a man ravaged by shame and anger, [vicariously felt by who ever listens] ultimately leading to his seclusion from social life. A poignant film paralleling Citizen Kane structurally as well as photographically, while not on par with Kane, an indelible performance by Oldman brings tears of joy to the world.

Guilty pleasure, because the supporting cast is fairly weak, but I can't resist Gary Oldman.

Not sure why my best friend was obsessed with this. Just started to wonder. Maybe she thought of herself as a Vietnamese ghetto Beethoven. I can see that. Anyway, she would have given it 100, if that helps you. 😂 I’m an Amadeus girl.

Obviously suffers in comparison to Amadeus but worth watching for Oldman's performance. This would have been improved by tightening up the editing and giving more time to Oldman being deranged.

OOF I love this movie so much. I loathe "based on a true story" movies because they play fast and loose with the truth, but a movie that is openly a "what if" scenario? Fantastic, all in for that. I love that this, like Amadeus, used Beethoven's own music as its score. I discovered Gary Oldman in this movie. That would have been enough on its own. But it's lovely & enjoyable in its own right.

rvw. lol i had it at 100 off memory from like grade 11 or 12 i think. things stuck with me since then like being the better citizen kane, his eulogy/how he withdrew cuz deaf yet stayed connected to his music so his heart etc, and me disagreeing that his music illustrated/evoked the things he said it did/wanted it to lol. aside from that powerful shit about him and his musical philosophy artistry etc and some about the romances and his son, it's pretty slow and meh a lot

A personal favourite not necessarily because it is a flawless film, because it isn't, despite a powerful central performance by Gary Oldman and a myriad of good intentions. Somehow the film never manages to connect all its components or to surpass a certain feeling that it is a sum of parts rather than a cohesive whole. But none the less, it features moments of brilliance and has the kind of heart and ambition that could, under more fortunate circumstances, have belonged to a masterpiece.

Oldman is his usually talented self, no one else really is, and the film seems oddly paced. Could have been a lot better.

Would've been perfect if it had stuck to his REAL life and not what was fabricated.

Good acting, merciless story and Gary Oldman!!! The movies doesn't set out to flatter Beethoven so much as give insight to the scope of his experience and influences on his music.

Surprisingly--to me, anyway, a classical musician--Gary Oldman makes a pretty good Beethoven. The writing, though... just embarrassing. Like Amadeus, it assigns mundane meanings and essentially non-sequitur narratives to great music--music whose meaning can never be defined in such idiotic ways. At least the acting is a bit more, um, restrained in this than the utterly over-the-top ridiculous Amadeus.

A wonderful biopic on an intriguing personality, perfectly acted by the chameleon of all actors, Gary Oldman. He made this the same year as Leon (The Professional) and watching the two back-to-back is highly recommended.
